Re: windows 98 files missing,dont have disk

I have a similar problem. I have a laptop running win98 (pre-loaded) (No CD-ROM and no Win98 floppies). I'm getting a "missing or corrupt win.com" error. I did some asking around and have been told to extract the win.cnf file from windows then rename it to win.com. The problem I have now is that I can't seem to locate the win.cnf file on my c drive. Found a Win98 cd copied the file onto floppy, but when I point to the floppy after the "extract" command etc, I'm getting a "Cannot open file a:\ (Null)" error. What I'm doing wrong? HELP

Re: Win.com file missing or corrupt

I have (found) and moved your post from another members existing thread into a new seperate posting for your problem.

Are you running 98FE or 98SE? The date/time stamp on the majority of system files will be;

98FE = 11/24/1998 8:02 AM

98SE = 4/23/1999 10:22 PM

(c:\command.com and c:\io.sys being two of these files.... At the C:\> prompt type in dir/a/o/p and check the date and time stamps on these two files. This can be performed from a MSDOS Prompt window.)

OR, is this thread moot due to your posting: cant partition 20 gig hard disk in full
