Many older Dells & Gateways used this method. Refered to as Ducts or Hoods.

Do you know your exact Gateway model?

Re: Want to replace hard drive but am new and a bit scared

I'm still searching for the paperwork. the model no. isn't printed anywhere on the PC itself. The only printed info is the windows sticker, the pentium 3 logo and the number 800, although I'm not sure this is the model just the speed of the processor?

Why is the model important? I don't think you can buy these sort of PSUs now can you? If I can't get a replacement I need to find some way of transfering the programs I have to a new computer. I'm not sure how to do this though as I have a lot of data saved within the program files...meaning I can't just reinstall them on a new PC(I'd lose all the data)

As I said before I'm still looking for the papers but I bought this PC back in 2000 and I've since misplaced all the papers. If there's anyway you could help me find a PSU or a way of transfering the data I'd appreciate it.

Re: Want to replace hard drive but am new and a bit scared

The model is important because if I knew it I could download the manual for it.

With the manual I could then "see" the computer for myself and be better able to help.

Most likely there are replacement PSU's for Gateways but again the search would be expedited by knowing the exact model.

As to programs and data: we pretty much covered that at the beginning of this thread where I suggested cloning the drive for replacement in the Gateway.

However if you are now thinking of a new computer it raises other issues not the least of which a lot of modern hardware simply will not run Windows '98 anymore.
