You can slave the drive in another computer in order to extract any data and pictures in a worse case scenario.
But also many CD's have a Non-Destructive as well as Destructive Recovery option.
The Non-Destructive would not remove your data. Also the CD might have access to the Recovery Console which will have simpler tools to try and boot the computer.
If you cannot get into any Safe Mode option then you will need your disk.
Once you boot the disk you should see your options and we can help further.
