Question Blue Screen Of Death After Video Card Install

Hi,

I have recently upgraded my pc with a new graphics card, a BFGTech OC GTX280. At the same time I have upgraded from XP to Vista Ultimate, plus a new Thermaltake water cooled case. During installation of my pc to it's new case I think I connected the wrong front panel audio connector (there are 2, one is for HD Audio, the other for AC'97) to the SupremeFX audio card, I'm not sure if I have damaged something during this, but I now have it disconnected and the same problem exists. I have included my dxdiag below.
Hope someone can help :helpsmili

Re: Blue Screen Of Death After Video Card Install

Tell us about your power supply - does it meet the demands of the new card?

Did you try removing the new graphics card and see if the computer works fine again?

Re: Blue Screen Of Death After Video Card Install

Hi,

sorry it took so long, i've been on holiday

The power supply is new, it's a Thermaltake 1500W supply. I have used both the 8-pin and 6-pin pci-express power cables for the graphics card, should I use 2 from seperate rails ? I haven't yet tried to remove the graphics card to see if the system operates normally without it, but will try later today. On the last blue screen I saw the message "Bad Pool Error" while it was collecting data for a crash dump. Does this sound like a hard-drive problem, because prior to going on holiday Vista warned me of a hard-drive error and instructed me to do a disk check, which I did and it found no errors. During my system build I tried to set up a RAID array, I removed the jumpers on the back of both drives that limit them to 1.5Gb/s. While I was installing Vista onto the raid array the other drive failed intermittently and I have now lost that drive, this one seemed to be ok. I have replaced the jumper again prior to installing Vista to this drive.

Thanks in advance

*EDIT*

Another blue screen with message "REFERENCE_BY_POINTER" on windows start-up

Re: Blue Screen Of Death After Video Card Install

1500? Yeah, that should be just enough!

Did you use the latest drivers timestamped June 26th, 2008 from BFG? There are 43 pages of release notes - you might want to scan through that too.

I don't know what you mean. Your manual says nothing about accepting an 8-pin.

Wow! According to your log, that card sure takes a big chunk of system RAM! Have you tested your RAM? You can use one of the following programs. Both require you to create and boot to a bootable floppy disk or CD to run the diagnostics. Using the floppy method is generally easier and yet another reason I still include floppy drives in my new PC builds. However, the CD method is just as effective at detecting RAM problems. Allow the diagnostics to run for several passes or even overnight. You should have no reported errors.
Windows Memory Diagnostic - see the easy to follow instructions under Quick Start Information.
or
MemTest86+ (for more advanced users) - an excellent how-to guide is available here.
Unfortunately, you have discovered the hard way that too many changes at once makes it difficult to determine which change, or combination of changes, is causing problems.

Re: Blue Screen Of Death After Video Card Install

Thanks, I will try all of this

I am lucky enough to be building my brothers pc for him so i have a spare Zotac GeForce 8800GT. I have tried it for 30 mins, then my pc shut down (no blue screen), the RAM i am using is Corsair Dominator 800 Mhz set at 1066Mhz 5-5-5-15 2T at 2.1 VDIMM.

Without reasearching yours and as a general comment, make sure all timings and clockrates are set to default settings - at least until this is resolved.

Re: Blue Screen Of Death After Video Card Install

I've changed my memory settings to auto and loaded default bios settings. I ran MemTest 86+ once and it passed without errors, I can't run for a prolonged time until tommorow morning. Here is a photo of my last blue screen after about 1 hour of playing Assasins Creed.

The 280GTX has two power connectors, one is an 8-pin the other a 6-pin, my power supply has three 8-pin PCI-Express power sockets using thermal management cables (plug in as required) and three 6-pin PCI-Express power sockets. The main loom from the power supply including the motherboard power cables etc., includes 2 more PCI-Express power cables which are non-detacheable, one is a 6-pin the other an 8-pin, these are the 2 that I connected to the graphics card. In the box there was a leaflet stating that both power sockets on the graphics card must be connected.

Okay, my mistake. Earlier, I looked in the BFG Install Manual but it was not specific. I should have looked at your card's System Requirements where it says
Quote:
One 8-pin and one 6-pin PCI Express® supplementary power connector -or- Three 6-pin PCI Express® supplementary power connectors
Note it says there should also be three 6-pin connectors on that card. If true, you might try that.

In any event, I can't image that power supply not being able to support that card, or a couple of those cards, regardless the connectors used. And even if a rail is overloaded, I would expect a high-end (not just high power, but quality made) PSU like that to manage overload events pretty easy - not so with a no name generic PSU.

If your does have 3 6-pin connectors as indicated, I might try that.

Still, earlier you said,
Quote:
...i have a spare Zotac GeForce 8800GT. I have tried it for 30 mins, then my pc shut down (no blue screen)
So that suggests something other than your graphics card too. I would definitely test the memory longer. And note that some memory modules just do not play well - with motherboards, or each other. You might have to try running with just one stick at a time.

What are your temps?

As for your Stop C2 errors, see STOP Messages.

Re: Blue Screen Of Death After Video Card Install

Ok, from your link, a C2 bad pool stop message seems to indicate a bad driver. I saw your link to the driver program - Driver Genius Professional - and decided to give that a go. There were two critical driver updates required, the first was for my wireless mouse (I never got round to installing the driver since the mouse was still pointing and clicking ).
The other was - NVidia Nforce UDA Driver package (114Mb).
So far so good, will keep you posted

Re: Blue Screen Of Death After Video Card Install

Blue screen again

my core temps at idle are :-

#0 is 50 degrees
#1 is 49
#2 is 48
#3 is 46

I don't think they get much more than 65 when under 100% load on all 4 cores since I have a water cooled block on my processor.

I ran memtest for 1hr 30 mins this morning, 4 passes no errors, I have to go out later so will leave it testing again. I don't know what BFG mean with regards to three 6-pin PCI-Express connectors, my card only has 2 power sockets, one 6-pin and the other 8-pin.

I still think that drivers are the problem, as for the memory it worked fine with this motherboard before (ASUS Striker Extreme). Could it be that both the graphics cards used are PCI Express 2.0 (supposedly backwards compatible to PCI-Express 1.0) and the motherboard is PCI-Express 1.0, just a thought

Having loaded alot of different Nvidia graphics drivers, is there a way to ensure that there are no idle drivers lying somewhere causing conflicts?
