Sound issues and Reinstall help

A little while ago I downloaded something, and ended up getting a WMA:Wimad virus detected.

I bealive I got rid off it pretty quickly, but after then web video stopped working (would start to load and then just as it started to play it would freeze the browser, leading me to have to restart the program.

I rolled back to a earlier time and gained my web video back, but lost all sound. I did this a few times, going back to different dates, but no dice.

Where my volume control is is just a red cross, and it states "No Audio Output Device is installed" and there is nothing under "Sound" in the device manager. I tried reinstalling the driver, to no effect, tried scanning for new hardware and nothing.

I finally tried reflashing the BIOS and it worked for about an hour.

I submitted and have just gone without sound until now, as I've noticed that all Media players have stopped playing saved videos (VLC works after a bit of time)

I can't think of anything else to try, so am now thinking of reinstalling Vista, as this installs over a year old, and getting a bit slow. Im looking for a way of keeping all of my files, as some of the things I have installed I don't have the disks for anymore (Ive emigrated halfway across the world you see)

So somehow I can keep everything working, while refreshing Vista. Hope you can help. I did a search for the audio issues, before I posted and didnt find a lot.

Cheers, Serin

Did you have your system cleaned by a Malware expert here or on any other forum. If you did please post the link here for review.

When asking for assistance, it is always a good idea to give us details of your system. I see you are running Vista, however more details would be of help to us.

There is a back up link in my signature at the bottom of this post which I would urge you to read. The Maintenance link may also assist you in making sure your system is clean of spyware issues.

Keep us posted if we can assist you further.

kind regards,

Re: Sound issues and Reinstall help

You need to make sure that your computer is clean. That should be your highest priority. Slow erratic functionality of windows might be an indication of an infection. I don't know this for sure but it wouldn't surprise me if some malware may block drivers. Besides that you have not included information about your computer which ties our hands and limits what support we can provide you. I strongly suggest that you read this & post another thread here. We are not allowed to help with malware in this section.

1) State your OS(s), any software involved in your problem, & any major updates (i.e. service pack, version, edition, service release, roll up, beta release, distribution [Linux], etc.) to your OS/software as applicable to your problem.
2) For hardware issues also provide your system information: RAM, processor, etc. in addition to your OS.
3) If you have more than one OS on your computer, how does your problem relate to your other OS(s)? This is especially important for hardware issues.
4) Provide as much detail as possible, being specific as even the most minute detail could help others help you solve the problem. Please tell us what you have tried. Please tell us the make/model of your computer.
5) Respond with the result(s) of the suggestion(s) from the other users to provide feedback, even if this only means saying "this worked!"
If you don't know your system information please consider running our hardware scan and post or PM me your link.

Welcome to D-A-L,

Please start you own thread in the appropriate forum for your issue. It is against The Terms of Service to highjack anothers thread and I quote from the link given.
Quote:
6. Please do not Hijack other members posts. For example, if you are browsing the Forum and see a member has posted a question with a problem very similar to your own, PLEASE DO NOT post in the same thread and say "I have this problem also! please help!" Instead simply click the new thread button and ask your question in your own thread. There are a ton of reasons for this but the main one being that although your problem sounds the same, it will most likely require a different solution.
Starting you own thread will give you the best help that volunteers here can give you.

kind regards,
