Re: problem with opening file in MS Excel

powercom i think you have misunderstood jephree as far as i can see he was not calling you a fool when somebody new comes on to this help forum it is a lot easier to start with very basic questions as we do not their level of knowledge in pc it
the question was a valid question and was the right one to be first asked
the next question i would like to ask is if you doub;e c;ick on the file what does it say or do
also is it saved as a .xls file type or is it .csv

If it dont fit...force it. If ya cant force it...get a bigger hammer. If it breaks...it probably needed replacing anyway.

Re: problem with opening file in MS Excel

well - whole story :
Problem is in opening one file in MS Excel. I use Windows XP and MS Office 2000.
This file we open every day - because it"s main file for company - now there are saved datas of almost whole year 2004 - so that"s why I really need that file.
Yesterday - I saved that file on CD and formated whole HDDs on PC, then installed whole system, MS office - but then file couldn"t work. The same also with file which we saved on CD last month. I checked that file - and seems it"s destroyed on CDs (always just that one file - about 1 MB big) - CDRW works well - not mistake of that storage.
That"s why I done something like "unformat" and that file I restore well (restoring was succesful). But I can"t still open that file. Seems that"s because of new system, new MS Office. I tried open that also on next PC - and still the same (so seems something is written in that file - probably by any virus - maybe macro virus) : it writes something like this (if I double-click or open in Excel) :

'Can't access file, maybe read-only protected or the drive may be read only. then something about the server may be not responding'.

Of course that"s not real reason for my problem - I checked that.
If I try to save that file (or rename, or "retype") - I still can"t open that. Only in note pad I can open it. But of course I can see almost no informations there well (although seems all datas are there - I can find there some datas, names ...)
On Internet I found probably few people had the same problem - but nobody wrote there any solution.
thanks for every body who concern with my problem

Re: problem with opening file in MS Excel

I"m absolutely sure - I checked that also in "old program Volkov commander", if that file I try to open in Excel Viewer - it writes "file damaged (broken)". File from last month on CD is also unable to open in that "Viewer" - it writes "file is not valid Excel Workbook" - if I "open" this "old" file on CD by F3 in Norton commander - I can see "damaged datas in about 70 percents of that file", if I open with F3 "new-actual" file - I can see on HDD it"s alright

Re: problem with opening file in MS Excel

I found in night that forum and those words as well - actually that "error" message I also just copy and paste for you here from that forum - because I"m from Czech republic and use Czech software - so I hoped he wrote that message better than I could translate it from CZ language to English
