pc freeze, unknown problem

hello,

i've been searhing this forum for quite some time now hoping that some of tha problems here which has a solution is similar to mine, but i've grown tired and i can't seem to find any clues..

last december, i bought for myself a 256mb ddr pc 266 memory to upgrade my computer, i installed it manually and that is where it all began...

my computer froze about 5 mins after it booted for the first time using the new memory that i bought, now it freezes frequently when i am online and offline the internet..

in my desperation i managed to come up with a solution... i opened as many programs as i can.. loading the memory until it is fully loaded, it stopped freezing, so i said WOW... i didn't know why but it worked. but I can't open that many programs just to stop my computer from freezing can I? i tried to open programs(specifically games) just one program did the trick, it stopped the freezing from happening.. but when I close that program, after about 5-10mins my computer freezes again..

I tried to change my memory back to the previous memory that was installed hoping that it would stop the freezing.. but it didn't. I also tried formatting my computer (like its new) but after installing winxp, the computer froze yet again...

I am typing this msg with a program running to stop my computer from crashing... pls.. I can't stand it anymore... any comments/suggestion/ or reply will be reaaaaally appreciated.. thanks

Re: pc freeze, unknown problem

so now you have one stick 256 RAM?

check your settings by right clicking my computer > click Properties > advanced > performance > settings > advanced > memory usage (try switching choice)

also

virtual memory > change > (choose) system managed size

also check your Event Viewer
start > run > eventvwr.msc
looking for errors that coincide with a freeze.

Re: pc freeze, unknown problem

- Yes, i have only one memory stick installed.

check your settings by right clicking my computer > click Properties > advanced > performance > settings > advanced > memory usage (try switching choice)

- I just switch my memory usage from programs to system cache. I'll just post this message before I restart my computer.

virtual memory > change > (choose) system managed size

- My computer is already using that setting

also check your Event Viewer
start > run > eventvwr.msc
looking for errors that coincide with a freeze.

- There is no error there regarding freeze.. BUT!! there are hundreds of errors there!! OMG .. first there are a LOT of warnings on (Event:2021 and 2022 - Source:Srv).. then comes the hundreds of errors namely (Event:31008 and 32003 - Source:IPNATHLP) (Event:9 - Source:atapi) (Event:7000,7009 and, 7034 - Source:Service Control Manager) (Event:2017 - Source:Srv) and lastly (Event:11 - Source:disk). I have absolutely no idea on what those errors are, I tried to go to a site that was mentioned in this forum but still I can't figure out what was causing them

BTW thanks for your reply ...

Re: pc freeze, unknown problem

those are mostly hardware errors. some relate to your IDE cables & or IDE controller.

you have 2 hard drives? do you have a controller card?

have you changed any of this hardware recently?

also cd/dvd drive?

also errors on your connection:

Model NetoDragon 56K Voice Modem: is this new? or has it been working ok?

Re: pc freeze, unknown problem

so you have tried different RAM "sticks" in different slots?

your BIOS is 2002 which maybe upgradable:

from that log all i can see for mobo is P4X266-8233

or; VIA P4X266/8233, 1AGP/5PCI/1CNR SLOTS, 3XPC266DDR, AC97, ATX

here is VIA

you need to find your exact model & see if there is a BIOS update.
