reset button

Hi,

I have a pc with xp pro and my wife pressed the reset button and I think the power button a bunch of times when it froze on aol. The machine goes thru the 2 screens befor the win screen but no windows screen. There are no error msgs. it just stops and I can't do anything I let it warm up still nothing the curser just blinks at the bottom of the screen. I can get into set up if this helps.

Re: reset button

Have you tried Safe Mode?

After BIOS POST or computer LOGO & Before Windows press the F8 key repeatedly.

If you get the option screen first try to boot the last good configuration that worked.
If that doesn't work:
Try Booting Safe Mode then System Restore.
If that doesn't work:
Try booting into Safe Mode.

Re: reset button

I tried pushing f8 while the machine is in the bios screen but nothing. I also tried turning off the power and taking out the batter for a couple min. still nothing. I also tried pulling the plug and holding the power button down did'nt work either. Any other ideas I'm open for anything at this point.

Re: reset button

Just to clarify the F8 would be after the BIOS before windows.

Is the CD drive or any drives being detected in the BIOS?

Also what type of XP CD do you have?

Re: reset button

I pressed it after. I don't have a cd. What do you think happened? I could boot it from a cd. I am able to get into the set up screen the one you have to press f1 to acess but I don't think the solution is there. When I got into the set-up area I checked the cd,floppy and the cd burner with the bios set up it head size, location, ect. it said they were all there. I know how to set it up for running off the disk but dont have one.

thanks Mike

Re: reset button

Is the Hard Drive seen in the BIOS?

If you can't get Safe Mode I don't know how to proceed without an XP Disk.

Unless your XP was OEM & the manufacturer has a built in recovery key.

Assuming this is the case; we can look this up if we know the exact make & model of the PC.

Re: reset button

Hard to say... why did it freeze in the first place

Still it would usually reboot into a chkdsk.

You said: "The machine goes thru the 2 screens before the win screen but no windows screen."

Do you mean something happens after the BIOS POST? or are the 2 screens before the win actually BIOS? In other words: Do you ever see the XP logo screen?

You also said: "there are no lights on in the cd the burner or the floppy" & yet they are all seen in the BIOS

Have you tried setting the BIOS to boot the Hard Drive First?

Do you know what kind of hard drive you have?

If so you can download & create a bootable floppy diagnostic to test the drive.

Here is a list:
