Computer shutdown during virus scan

New computer, fall 2004. On or about March 11, 2005 unable to complete norton antivirus. It shuts down at the following point
Window Installer 8cc8a68.msi (I do not know where the colons or slashes go I got this before it shut down this last time.)
Any ideas?

Re: Computer shutdown during virus scan

You can try the scan in Safe Mode.

Also run a Search for that particular file (8cc8a68.msi) & scan it individually.

Re: Computer shutdown during virus scan

I am sorry, I did not let you know that I scanned in Safe Mode and the computer shut down when it arrived at that file as well.

I have also gone through the entire registry and when I found the offending file I attempted and was told "cannot delete".

I even deleted it through Windows and when I returned to do another scan it actually passed this file and just when I thought it was alright, it shutdown on the next file, which has similar numbers and letters. I have not been able to find and exact match, and really do not know what to do.

Everything else about Norton's works. I have completed a scan on line with thier security response and guess what - it finds no problems.

Thanks for trying to help.

Re: Computer shutdown during virus scan

Is this the only thing wrong with your computer? And it just started happening? Any coinciding events? New hardware/ software? etc.

Is this Norton AV 2005? or System Works? or?

Also since those files are installer files you might want to see if you find them here:

Description of the Windows Installer CleanUp Utility

Re: Computer shutdown during virus scan

Thank you.
Norton 2005 is the only thing that does not work. A coinciding event? My daughter came home from college and hooked into our home network. Her Norton 2005 did its thing as scheduled and the other computer in the house is similarly not affected.

I am really not sure that I want to use the installer clean-up as suggested. I do not want to do something that may remove programs that I have no idea how to reinstall. For example, if it uninstalls something that I do not have on a disk but purchased online, I would not have clue one as to how to get it back.

Re: Computer shutdown during virus scan

First off you can download the Installer CleanUp Utility just to see what is listed. It won't remove anything unless you tell it to.

Second do you have the Norton CD? (just to clarify: this is Anti Virus 2005 & not System Works correct?)

Third consider uninstalling & reinstalling Norton Anti Virus 2005

Uninstalling Norton AntiVirus 2005

And just to clarify: You think this problem started right after your daughter ran her scan? & you are saying the other computer is fine & runs Norton ok?

Ok I downloaded it and it lists a number of potential problems with my computer

Yes this is the Norton Antiviurs 2005 version
Third consider uninstalling & reinstalling Norton Anti Virus 2005
That I can do!
Uninstalling Norton AntiVirus 2005
I understand this process and thank you for the thread for further information
And just to clarify: You think this problem started right after your daughter ran her scan? & you are saying the other computer is fine & runs Norton ok?
That is correct. She came home and hooked her computer up to mine which I guess is the mother of the others. The next time my virus scan was to occur was the first time it failed ant the computer restarted itself. It was on March 11th. Her virus scan scheduled for the next day, went off without a hitch. The other childrens' computer also scanned without any problem on the 13th
I will try uninstalling and reinstalling my Norton Antivirus. Perhaps when I deleted the registry item in .msi what I actually did was to destroy something that involved the Norton? Another thought just occurred to me, I was attempting to remove CoolWebSearch from my computer originally. This registry key was listed as one that contained this adware which I understand is as close to a virus as one can come.

Re: Computer shutdown during virus scan

You might want to read owen's Instructions about CWShredder; Adaware: Spybot S&D; etc. (no need to post a log at this point).

Also what Service Pack do you have?

CoolWebSearch might have been mimicking valid files.

Hopefully a reinstall of Norton will get you going again.

As to the Install CleanUp Utility: just because something is listed does not mean it is a problem. I was just curious if you saw the .msi files there.

Let us know how it goes
