Question Yahoo & SP2

I just rebuilt my computer and upgraded to X.P. but have not upgraded to broad band still using dial up as in SBC yahoo. the problem Iam having is that when X.P. automaticly downloads SP2 that it makes my browser not work right like something is interfering with it.
This is what usually happens.
I can get online, it loads my home page just fine, I can go to another web site or even 2 or 3, but what happens if i need to log onto a site or need to go into another window (or page) of the same site I get the page unable to display error and then it will not let me go anywhere else and i have to restart my internet conection.
Ive contacted SBC Yahoo about this and this is what they had me do.
Check settings, reset security to accept all cookies, turn off firewall that came with xp, turn off nortons, and then non of that worked. So then they had me do the repair for X.P. that put it back at SP1 ( or the way xp was when first loaded) and reload there software and apply a patch for it, but when I download the patch it says "nothing was changed"
Now this is where Iam at. Using X.P. SP1, fresh download of Yahoo, and X.P. wanting to install SP2 that it will download but will screw up yahoo.
Is there a way to fix this or am I
A: going to have to get a new ISP
B: have to go back to Win 2000
C: just stay with X.P. SP1
I hope ive expained the problem iam having sufficiently and really hope you guys can help.

Re: Yahoo & SP2

I suppose this is what sbc yahoo told you:

Quote:
On 08/27/04 SBC sent an e-mail to their customers indicating that their
custom brower, connection manager, etc. needs to be upgraded to support
WinXP SP2.

Text of that e-mail here:

Attention SBC Yahoo! customers who use
Windows XP Operating System

Dear SBC Yahoo! Member:

If you are using the Windows XP Operating System on any of your computers
connected to SBC Yahoo! Dial or SBC Yahoo! DSL, this courtesy message is for
you. Users of other operating systems are not affected.

In August, Microsoft Corporation will be offering Windows XP users an update
called "Service Pack 2". You may hear about the Service Pack 2 update in the
news, on the Internet, or by seeing prompts on your computer screen telling
you to load a "Critical Upgrade" to Windows.

Service Pack 2 provides a series of security enhancements for the Windows XP
operating system. These new updates and features may cause SBC Yahoo! and
other software on your computer to behave differently.

Based on our testing, SBC has determined that some users will experience
changes after loading Service Pack 2 when using the customized SBC Yahoo!
Browser, Parental Controls, SBC Yahoo! Web mail, and Instant Messenger. SBC
and Yahoo! have prepared an update for these software components that you
should load to ensure compatibility with Service Pack 2.

Please copy and paste the below URL into your browser to download the
software update.
http://download.yahoo.com/dl/sbcy/xpsp2fix.exe

In addition, if you are using a firewall on your XP computer, you will need
to go to the firewall manufacturer's website and load any software updates
they provide for Service Pack 2. Although we do not provide support for
firewall software, you can find information and web-links for the major
firewall companies at:
a.. Zone Alarm: http://www.zonelabs.com
b.. Norton Personal Firewall:
http://www.symantec.com/techsupp/sp2/faq.html
c.. McAfee Personal Firewall Plus:
http://www.secureie.com/c/002/firewa..._02.asp?source...
If you experience changes with other software on your computer, check the
software manufacturer's website for information regarding Service Pack 2
software updates.

Please refer to the SBC Yahoo! Help Site, http://help.sbcglobal.net , for
more details on Windows XP Service Pack 2 and SBC Yahoo! software updates
that are available for your computer.

If you want to know more about the Windows XP Service Pack 2 update, please
refer to the Microsoft site at http://support.microsoft.com/windowsxp/sp2 or
call 1.888.SP2.HELP (1.888.772.4357). If you need additional help with SBC
Yahoo!, please refer to the SBC Yahoo! Help Site at
http://help.sbcglobal.net

Sincerely,
SBC Yahoo! Member Services
As to your options you can see if you followed all the SP2 suggestions here as to a good install:
http://michaelstevenstech.com/index.html

Running SP1 with all its' updates & providing you have a firewall should work fine.

Or get a new ISP.

I see no reason to go back to 2K.

Hope this helps. Let us know if we can help further.

Re: Yahoo & SP2

Ok i think I'll stay with with SP1, but how do i get windows to let me see what i want to install and turn off the automatic update.
also i wouldn't mind going to a new ISP ( and i know that you'll want to send me to a comparison site) but ive already checked them out and really its a hit or miss on getting a good one, and really have had only one problem with Yahoo(billing issue) in 5 yrs of using it. If I could get a good recomendation for another from someone(like you) like said i wouldn't mind switching. I would also like to commend you on your knowledge of computers as this is the second time that you have helped me and i find what you have to offer very useful, and if no one else has ever said it id like to thank you for being a very usefull (free) resource. thanks again.

Re: Yahoo & SP2

As to Windows Updates there are 2 settings:

1. Right click My Computer then click Properties then the Automatic Updates tab:
Turn off Automatic Updates.

2. Administraive Tools | Services | Automatic Updates:
Stop & then Disable this service (right click it & click properties)

Then just make sure you check the Update site at least every month to view what is available.

As to ISP I really have no idea. I use Bellsouth because it's my phone company & it hasn't failed for going on 5 years now. It might be expensive compared to the offers I see around but it works so well for me that I don't question it.

You might want to start a new thread in the Internet Browser Issues and Questions section. I seem to remember some discussion there as to ISP's.

As to your thanx

Thank you

I like to help as best I can. Glad it helped you. Let us know if we can help further.

Re: Yahoo & SP2

well I was online and going back to check the main page for X.P. it did it again so it must not be SP2 doing it. then I just installed spybot search and destroy earlier today and it found DOS exploiter witch was the only thing that messed with the regestry and also had 5 entries for it do you think that might have been my problem jephree

It's probably a false alarm.

The DSO exploit was patched long ago by IE Cumulative Update
MS02-015, in March of 2002. If you've installed this specific patch,
or any subsequent IE Cumulative Updates, or Service Pack 1, you're
safe. It would appear that the latest version of Spybot S&D is only
checking for Internet zone settings in the registry that could be used
as work-around protection, and not for the presence of any corrective
patches. Hopefully, the makers of Spybot will soon fix this bug.

MS02-015 March 28, 2002 Cumulative Patch for Internet Explorer

If you like, you can test your system for this particular
vulnerability at this web site:
http://www.greymagic.com/security/advisories/gm001-ie/

The makers of SpyBot S&D have acknowledged the problem and will
fix it on their next update:
http://www.safer-networking.org/inde...hs&detail=curr...
Just out of curiosity; maybe try using Firefox rather than IE just to see if there is a difference.
