Print spooler problems

Yesterday I tried to print to a printer connected to my notebook computer from another workstation in my home network. Suddenly the computer that I was printing from and the notebook stopped. Since then both computers cannot start normally starting only in safe mode. Searching in the net I found that if I tried to stop some services, perhaps they would start normally again. After many tries I described that the print spooler is the cause for the problem. However disabling it causes me not to print and I don't know how to fix this problem. I also heard the it may be caused by some virus or adware, however nothing was found after running the spy sweeper software and AVG 7.0 edition. Can someone please help me?

Important information:

First computer is running windows me and in addition to the printing problem the display is set to 800x640 which can not be changed and windows does not recognize the monitor. It has 256 mb ram.
Second computer – the notebook Vaio pcg-grv550 - runs windows XP home edition and has 512mb ram. Sometimes it also turns off suddenly in the middle of a work. The printer is an HP PSC1200 USB.

Re: Print spooler problems

Did this setup & printer ever work? Is this a new problem?
I'm wondering if there is some conflict between XP & ME?

As to the XP machine: first off change this setting:

rt. click My Computer then click Properties then Advanced then Startup and Recovery Settings then unclick Automatically restart

In the event of a crash this will supply you with exact error messages.

Also: look in your Event viewer: rt. click My Computer then click Manage then Event Viewer.
Or: Administrative Tools/Event Viewer or Start/Run/ eventvwr
Open the system as well as the application tabs & look for X errors. Click error line for details.
Post back the source & event id especially of errors that seem to coincide with a crash.

Have you uninstalled the printer and all its' software?

Installing and Uninstalling the HP PSC 1100 and 1200 All-in-One Series Software in Microsoft(R) Windows

Did you follow the above directions in the process?

Just to add: Printers & their software are very close to graphic devices & software. That being said your ME graphics settings are not surprising. You may need to reinstall those drivers. In order to repair the ME machine you might want to post to the ME section as these are vastly different OS's.

Re: Print spooler problems

Hello Jephree,

Thank you for your reply. This is the first problem that appear in this XP machine. Usually I use to print the way I did that day, but cannot avoid a conflict problem.
I tried both alternatives and I almost got crazy when looking at the event viewer becuase it shows so many errors that I would take a week to post them here. The most common error that apear is a warning that states different information for each one:
"the SNMP service is ignoring extension agent key software\microsoft\IPXMibAgent\Current Version because it is missing or misconfigured"
Event ID 1101
"the SNMP service is ignoring extension agent key software\microsoft\IPMulticastMibAgent\Current Version because it is missing or misconfigured"
Event ID 1101
"the SNMP service is ignoring extension agent key software\microsoft\IGMPMibAgent\Current Version because it is missing or misconfigured"
Event ID 1101
"the SNMP service is ignoring extension agent key software\microsoft\SNMP_EVENTS\Current Version because it is missing or misconfigured"
Event ID 1101
"the SNMP service is ignoring extension agent key software\microsoft\SNMPMIB\Current Version because it is missing or misconfigured"
Event ID 1101
"the SNMP service is ignoring extension agent key software\microsoft\HOSTMIB\Current Version because it is missing or misconfigured"
Event ID 1101
"the SNMP service is ignoring extension agent key software\microsoft\LANManagerMIB2Agent\Current Version because it is missing or misconfigured"
Event ID 1101
all these errors are related to yesterday, before I post my thread. After those, there are about 500 others errors. Some of them are Service Control Manager related. Other are DCOM and the rest similar to those above.

The HP software I´ve already unistalled it in the same day that the problem started.

One more thing: Everytime I run the spy sweeper software the computer turns off automaticly and I have to run it in the safe mode, otherwise it doesn´t run.

What can I do next? Appreciate your reply.

Re: Print spooler problems

Jephree,

Just a few moments after posting my reply the XP machine sundelly turned off again. The X error reported was:

The fax service depends on the print spooler service which failed to start because of the following error:
The service cannot be started, either because it is disabled or because it ha no enabled devices associated with it.
Event ID: 7001
Source: Service Control Manager.

The print spooler service is really disabled as explained before. But for me it isn´t the reason for crashing, however i don´t have the expertise to say so.

regards,

JML

Re: Print spooler problems

Just to clarify:

The printer between the XP & ME DID work at one time?

Also you have deleted the HP software from the XP according to these instructions?

Quote:
Follow these steps to remove the software:

1. Click Start, click Programs (click All Programs in Windows XP), click Hewlett-Packard, select the HP all-in-one folder, and then click Uninstall HP Software.
2. An Uninstall Information window will appear. Read this information in case any applies to your uninstall. Click Next to continue.
3. The uninstaller will gather information and then remove the software.
4. When the uninstaller is finished, a message will appear requesting that the computer be restarted. Click the Restart button to restart the computer.
Check again for Red X errors that would relate to the time & date of the printer problem.

Also go to Start | Search (type in) .dmp
Any finds here?

Besides the spyware scan is the XP running 0k?

Re: Print spooler problems

Jephree,

Despite the spyware scan the XP runs well but not printing.

Looking closer into the errors like you said, I did not find anything related to time and printer but found one very common similar to the warning that I included before, which states the following message:
"The application Management service terminated with the following error:
The specified module could not be found"
Event ID 7023
Service Control Manager

The HP software were unistalled like shown in your message and the printer between the XP and ME use to work well.

I have something to say that might be important:
I heard from a friend that the cause of this issue would be an adware or spyware that come into the XP from the ME via the windows messenger when i tried to print. I do not know if this is real but decide to inform you about that.

I already ran the spyware and nothig was found the same happened with the antivirus. Both are up to date.

When I was triyng to search the .dmp file, the system turned off continuously. Gave up after 5 tries. The error report was the same as i reported before:
"The fax service depends on the print spooler service which failed to start because of the following error:
The service cannot be started, either because it is disabled or because it ha no enabled devices associated with it.
Event ID: 7001
Source: Service Control Manager."

It seems to me that this is the error that appears after the system crash, because the time shown is very close to those that it turned off.

Any idea about what happened?

Brgds.

JML

Re: Print spooler problems

Here is a page I found searching your Print Spooler Errors:

How to clean up printer drivers

Also:7001 service control manager

With the printer uninstalled re-enable the Print Spooler Service.

Just trying to get XP back on track.

Also as to the Spyware issue:
please follow owen's Instructions and then post your log in the Spyware, Adware, Viruses and HijackThis Logs section (Not Here).
