Drive Letter Problem

I recently had to replace the hard drive on my desktop. I forgot to remove all the devices when I installed Windows XP and it assigned the drive letter F to my hard drive. I have since removed the devices and so C is now free and I am trying to get the hard drive back to the letter C. I can't use the easy XP method because it says that you can't change the drive letter of the drive that has the boot files or something.

What is the best way to start over and get the computer to reassign everything so the hard drive becomes C again? I am willing to reinstall Windows XP as I have not installed any other programs since replacing the hard drive.

Any help is appreciated.

Thanks!

Re: Drive Letter Problem

Doing a Clean Install onto your Primary Master drive should do the trick.

Some details here:

Re: Drive Letter Problem

Thanks for the help. I got it to work. Now, I have another question which I hope is a bit simpler. Everytime I start up my computer, a file folder opens up. Is there a way to stop the folder from starting up everytime my computer starts up?

Thanks!

Re: Drive Letter Problem

What folder is it? System32? If so:

Visit MS-MVP Kelly Theriot's page at
http://www.kellys-korner-xp.com/xp_tweaks.htm and scroll down
to Item No. 260. In the right column, click on "System32 Folder Opens
Upon Boot". Download this repair file and then run the repair.

To read more about this issue check out the Microsoft Knowledge Base Article
System32 Folder Opens When Logging on to Windows
http://support.microsoft.com/?kbid=170086

Otherwise check your startup entries via Start/Run/ msconfig | Startup

Look for this folder entry & unclick it from the list.
