Seemingly random lockups

I just installed a new motherboard and got everything in correctly, all fans work and CPU/heatsink was installed properly

temperature is fine, case is at around 42 and CPU is 60 (during games and multiple programs)

and yet, ill still have these lockups seemingly at random...

i really dont know why and how to fix them

if it matters, the hard drives in mine were installed on a previous motherboard and have info according to that, all programs work, and everything runs fine

it just locks up at random...

specs if needed:

gigabyte k7 triton socket A mobo
powercolor radeon 9600XT
twin seagate barracuda 120gb
amd athlon xp 3200+
1 gig RAM pc3200

Re: Seemingly random lockups

You need to run a Repair Install of XP after changing a motherboard.

Good guide here:

http://michaelstevenstech.com/XPrepairinstall.htm

Good explaination here:

Quote:
Normally, and assuming a retail license (many OEM installations
and licenses are not transferable to a new motherboard - check yours
before starting), unless the new motherboard is virtually identical
(same chipset, same IDE controllers, same BIOS version, etc.) to the
one on which the WinXP installation was originally performed, you'll
need to perform a repair (a.k.a. in-place upgrade) installation, at
the very least:

How to Perform an In-Place Upgrade of Windows XP
http://support.microsoft.com/directo...;EN-US;Q315341

The "why" is quite simple, really, and has nothing to do with
licensing issues, per se; it's a purely technical matter, at this
point. You've pulled the proverbial hardware rug out from under the
OS. (If you don't like -- or get -- the rug analogy, think of it as
picking up a Cape Cod style home and then setting it down onto a Ranch
style foundation. It just isn't going to fit.) WinXP, like Win2K
before it, is not nearly as "promiscuous" as Win9x when it comes to
accepting any old hardware configuration you throw at it. On
installation it "tailors" itself to the specific hardware found. This
is one of the reasons that the entire WinNT/2K/XP OS family is so much
more stable than the Win9x group.

As always when undertaking such a significant change, back up any
important data before starting.

This will also probably require re-activation, unless you have a
Volume Licensed version of WinXP Pro installed. If it's been more
than 120 days since you last activated that specific Product Key,
you'll most likely be able to activate via the Internet without
problem. If it's been less, you might have to make a 5 minute phone
call. ~Bruce Chambers

Re: Seemingly random lockups

Sorry ...a little confused.

You said: "the hard drives in mine were installed on a previous motherboard and have info according to that"

What info?

If you re-installed XP on your current hard drive on your current motherboard:
then that should be fine.

If so: by lock-up do you mean everything just freezes? And you need to power off from the switch?

Any error messages?

Look in your Event viewer: rt. click My Computer then click Manage then Event Viewer.
Or: Administrative Tools/Event Viewer or Start/Run/ eventvwr
Open the system as well as the application tabs & look for X errors. Click error line for details.
Post back the source & event id especially of errors that seem to coincide with a lock-up.

And or:

Go to start | search (type in) .dmp
Note the location of your latest .dmp file.

Then:

1) Download and install the
Debugging Tools from Microsoft
2) Download and install this
debugwiz
3) Open the Wiz & Browse to, or paste in the path to, your latest .dmp file.
4) After the Wiz creates a Text document attach it back to this thread.

Re: Seemingly random lockups

Those were all internal debugger errors. GetContextState failed, 0x80004005

This could quite possibly have occured if you do not have SP1 or 2 as it doesn't appear in the header.

If you do not have SP2 you should. This in itself may sort your problems.

Try Windows Update via All Programs & take all Critical Updates.

If the problem continues please post further logs.

Re: Seemingly random lockups

Try the settings here:

Right click My Computer then click Properties then Advanced then Startup and Recovery | Settings: Write debugging information.

What is listed there? If Complete or Kernel switch to Mini. If mini switch to Complete or Kernel.
Sometimes just switching this setting will straighten things out.
Also if you have Mini & change to Complete check the Overwrite box.

Another possible source of info:

View your Error Log via:
[1] Start Menu
[2] Help and Support
[3] Pick a Task
[4] Tools
[5] Advanced System Information
[6] View the Error Log

Also are your dives SATA/RAID? If so did you install the SATA/RAID drivers with XP?

After all this I think we're looking at hardware.

I have not reviewed your board but are you sure that your RAM & CPU & Graphics card are compatible?

2 quick links to your added error:
