Can Anyone Help Please
I unintalled Norton 2004 and installed Norton 2005...that's when my problems started. Freezing windows, not able to get on the net. Having read about Norton 2005 problems (should have read before I know) decided not to try to reintall. Restored computer to earlier date and installed AVG.
Still experiencing problems if I can get on the net and open web pages then I cannot open any program files and vice versa. The whole thing is really slow.
I used Registry Mechanic and Bug Doctor who both said that they found missing registry items and had repaired them.
Now when I load up the system I get the error message "Registry data files not found".
I have run a full system scan and AVG scan and nothing shows except the Registry error message on start up and like now I am accessing the net but cannot open any of my program files. Also I will probably be able to surf for a few minutes and then the whole thing will freeze again.
Any help to resolve the problems would be gratefully received.
Thank you
Remy

Re: Can Anyone Help Please
If Norton was the source of all of this you might consider reworking those issues.
Most Norton products have manual deletion instructions. Add/remove Programs rarely works satisfactorily. You need to look up your exact product at symantec & search for uninstall.
Another possibility is to run sfc /scannow to repair your registry.
Go to start/run/ sfc /scannow
You will need your XP CD to do this.

Re: Can Anyone Help Please
Great that has fixed most problems. I can now open both programs and the web pages without one affecting the other. However windows still freezing when on the net. If I use the pull down menu to access a site, it stays blue but does not load page?
Thanks for all your help and any suggestions are really appreciated.

Re: Can Anyone Help Please
What did you do? Run sfc /scannow? Or manually uninstall Norton? Or both?
By drop down menu are you referring to your Favorites on the toolbar?
Also: look in your Event viewer: rt. click My Computer then click Manage then Event Viewer.
Or: Administrative Tools/Event Viewer or Start/Run/ eventvwr
Open the system as well as the application tabs & look for X errors. Click error line for details.
Post back the source & event id especially of errors that seem to coincide with this issue.

Re: Can Anyone Help Please
Hi
I ran sfc/scannow and also ran the SymNRT program to remove the final pieces of the Norton. I didn't know about either of these programs so thank you so much.
The freezing is now not so bad but will try your suggestions and feed back because I realise that helps every one else looking here.
However, the last problem (hopefully that I now have) is that in outlook express I can send mail but cannot receive it. Tiscali confirm on their help page that the error message that I have means that the Internet Protocol ICP/IP is corrupt and it will need unintalling and reinstalling and that this will involve using the windows disk.
However, looking at the screen where this ICP/IP which is located:
Tiscali broadband
Properties
Networking
Only the install button is active and the uninstall is grayed out...so it looks like it needs installing (obviously been corrupted maybe along the line).
Tiscali help says I will needs my windows disk so I type the command that they suggest and put the windows disk in but don't know where to go from there to find the drivers. Obviously I will email them and see if they can help but they are not always very speedy at replying!!
So if anyone can help with this I would be grateful.
Million thank you's
Remy

Re: Can Anyone Help Please
Hi,
Thanks, things seem quite stable now...just an odd bit of freezing on the net. The outlook express problem was in fact the AVG firewall blocking incoming emails....so I clicked off scan emails within custom install of AVG and now it is working fine.
However, I will keep a note of the above in case I need to install.
The protocol ICP/IP window still just displays install...so sorry if this is a DOH question!!!but I am quite a novice really. Do I need to follow steps above to install or should I just leave things alone as it all seems to be working oK?
Also I have upon start up PC is not launching my ISP dial up box anymore. Do you know where I will find these connections. I have tried:
dial whenever a network connection is not present
and
always dial my default
But these are not launching the box on startup????
Thanks
Remy

Re: Can Anyone Help Please
Hi,
Quick update....the dial up box is now launching OK now...don't think windows was keeping my settings when I shut down...
So just need to know if I should still install the protocol ICP or what you would recommend?
Thank you
