search results (won't close)

I have returned with our new computer, and the first thing that is making us crazy (besides letting dell do the install)--is that:when we search for files and folders, and close it-it stays on the task bar, and it does not function from there anymore, even though the task manager says it's running, it's not really, and if you open it again, it just adds another and so on; and if I click on the end task (well, a whole'nother post)LoL- everything just goes crazy, and Cpu 100 ???
Only way to get it gone is to re-boot
Tried searching here and made a few quick replies of things I have already learned the hard way LoL--tried kellys' also..any help would be greatly appreciated..........Blessings to All
Ps:Well Dan I think 98 Se (which we still have) is a little more friendly with the programming part LoL--couldn't have done it without you fine people here at D-A-L (my second home) LoL

Re: search results (won't close)

Dell has a history of such Start Menu issues.

My first reaction if this is a brand new computer is to insist that Dell get it to work the way it is supposed to.

That being said & not knowing what type of disks Dell provided you with I could suggest the following.

Assuming your XP is under C: look for C:\WINDOWS\inf (or WINNT if not WINDOWS)

Scroll down to & right click the file srchasst.inf and then left click INSTALL on the context menu.

Re: search results (won't close)

Sorry it took so long, been woking alot, ok, have been trying, and it would say it couldn't find msgr3en.dll, and when I browsed for it-it said it couldn't install; and I tried one more time before posting and it worked, but it did not fix it, as for dell, am still wondering why I even purchased a warranty lol, as they are not much help at all, but will keep bugging them; I was just thinking that if I wanted to fix it-it would be from here; as for the Cd, well, I browsed it, and it is a dell windows Xp edition, which is not what I had hoped (pre-installed with spyware) LoL...
First thing I did, was get rid of my way web bar; interesting how dell hides the program, so the add/remove will not work, and, as I said the end programs doesn't work at all(for any thing) and it seems that none of the programs I have will work, always not responding....Tried cleaning the reg. with the reg seeker, seems to speed everything up, but still no help elsewhere(several hundred entries) even tried putting them back in,(took the red & green out seperate this time) and yesterday the search results worked for awhile, Ok, I think that's about enough information, probably too much lol...Just trying to learn this Xp thing. Blessings to All
Ok, off to read some of the many posts on task manager
Also bugging program vendors, as to why they won't respond.lol
Also, it works in safe mode

Re: search results (won't close)

Sorry, I am not following the entirety of your issues.

If you can list individual problems & or questions it might be more clear.

Did you resolve the Search Assistant issue?

Did you try the srchasst.inf fix?

Re: search results (won't close)

Sorry, been really busy:yes, I did do the install, and sometimes it works and sometimes it does not; depends on how it feels when it starts up LoL ...
Right now I have a real concern, and I think dell has me black listed, every time I get them, I go on hold and no one returns , sometimes when this thing starts, it gets stuck and it starts making a high pitched sound from the tower, hapened twice so far, and after a couple of cotrol/alternate deletes, it goes ok, I'm afraid it my happen when no one is here, and don't know if it is a good idea to leave it shut off; everything is minor to me right now because this is scary to me; can't be right ......
Blessings to All (will post computer specs as soon as I work it up, and a hijack log if you want) Sincerest Thanks

What sort of noise is it? Is it an alarm type noise?

Re: search results (won't close)

It's kinda like a high pitched squeal-continuously until I stop it, and shutting off doesn't seem to work, have to control/alternate delete a few times, and then it goes.
Blessings and Thank You

Thought I would post a quick reply (but not too loudly the computer might here me)LoL
The search reults have been closing for a couple of days now, hopefully from now on...
I suppose I probably need to start another thread for the squealing issue and others as well; have been doing alot of research when I can, but after about 3days I come running LoL...Have also found alot of good sites from here also , and also in the threads, sometimes I just don't see an answer...Thank You All Sincerely
