How MS fixed my lock up problems after an XPPRO install
This is not a questions, but a passing on of my experience that may help somebody else. I paid $35 to Microsoft to figure out why my box was locking up after I did a fresh install of XP-Pro. The problem was quite simply that I did not have SP2 installed. I was pretty sure they were going to give up on me (I'd seen computers lockup before because of grounding problems). This was for a version of pro that obviously did not include sp2.
First there was a loop concerning the most recent version of MSMessenger, which I didn't even want. The guy had me log in as an admin, then reboot to safe mode, then get the right version of messenger and install it. But the lock ups kept happening. Then I downloaded the SP2 gorilla, again in safe mode. After going through that install, the lock ups went away. I was on the phone for hours with their Indian tech (2 different sessions with two different Indians) but eventually SP2 got installed and now all problems are gone. Please pass it on.
