Thumbs down Problems with Sound

Hello guys and girls, new to the site and in need of desperate help. Will try and be as specific as possible

Recently installed WM Player 10 and all was running fine until I received an error message saying I needed to install 'Frauhofer IIS Mpeg Layer3 Codec'
Installed said codec and now all my sound settings are shot

I no longer have a volume icon in my taskbar, yet I have been through all the neccessary to put it in there, it just won't come

Don't have any problems with mp3's, can play them fine but I have no system sounds and I cannot hear anything from websites etc

It's driving me mental and any advice you can give me would be gratefully appreciated

Thank you in advance

Re: Problems with Sound

You might try a system restore to before that download.

Or try uninstalling that codec (if possible).

Have you checked all your settings via: Control Panel | Sounds & Audio Devices?

If you have a full version XP CD try to run sfc /scannow by going to

start/run/ sfc /scannow

Note the space between sfc & /scannow. You will be asked to insert your XP CD. This will fix any damaged system files.

Re: Problems with Sound

I have system restore points but it is saying they cannot be executed properly??

All my audio devices are ok, the problem has only been happening since I installed that codec, speaking of which I can't find out where it is to uninstall it....if it is still here

will try scannow and see if that will work

Re: Problems with Sound

If none of your points are valid you might want to reset system restore by turning it off then back on.
This will erase all points but should reset the service for the future. You can do this via right clicking My Computer then click Properties then System Restore.

From the Control Panel | Sounds & Audio Devices | Sounds
Click on a Program Event & then under Sounds press the arrow > to test the sound.

If you recall the source of the download you could try it again & see how it is identified or where it was installed. Or run a search for Frauhofer.

Let us know how scannow went.

Re: Problems with Sound

Maybe something here will help:

Where did my Sounds go?
http://www.kellys-korner-xp.com/top10faqs.htm

Don't know if the Fraunhofer site will give any idea of where it was installed but fwiw:
http://www.iis.fraunhofer.de/amm/

Another tack would be to reinstall your audio drivers. To ID your device go to:
Start/Run/ dxdiag | Sound

Re: Problems with Sound

What is the device listed under dxdiag?

What is the make & model # of the computer?

Searching the manufacturers' web site will usually find drivers.

Re: Problems with Sound

Dell does not list the soundMAX for the dimension 2400.
Only:
Analog Devices ADI 198x Integrated Audio
Creative Labs Sound Blaster Live! 24-bit
Creative Labs Sound Blaster Live! 5.1 Digital

Did you add a Sound Card?

http://support.dell.com/support/down...os=WW1&osl=EN#

However a general search for soundMAX finds these possibilities:

http://www.google.com/search?q=sound...igital%20audio

The official soundMAX site throws it back to Dell.

You can try this diagnostic scan:

http://pccheckup.dellfix.com/rel/?ra...99814991117195

Or else if you can ID your Intel motherboard & search Intel for audio drivers:

http://downloadfinder.intel.com/scri...ort_Intel.aspx

You can use Everest to ID the board:

http://www.lavalys.com/products/over...ng=en&pageid=1

Also: Have you checked the Device Manager? Start/Run/ devmgmt.msc | Sound...
