Screen Resolution, Internet access w/XP

I reinstalled XP on a Dell Computer; the cd was from a different model Dell. I can't get out to the internet, the screen resolution can't be changed from 4 bit and the I don't get sound. Everything else looks ok. I checked under device managers and it shows the drivers missing. I downloaded the drivers from the Dell site, but I'm not getting anywhere. Any suggestions are welcome.

Re: Screen Resolution, Internet access w/XP

Is the Dell XP CD SP1 or 2 or just XP?

If just XP this registry edit affects internet connection:

Quote:
Locate the following registry subkey:
HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SYSTEM\CurrentControlSet\Servic es\RasMan\PPP\EAP

Delete the following registry keys under the EAP subkey:
25
26

Quit Registry Editor, and then restart your computer.
Assuming that you don't have the proper CD & that the only problems are sound & graphics drivers I would try the drivers from the Dell model of the CD that you used rather than the drivers for your actual model. Don't see how that would make anything worse.

This is also assuming that you do not have an independent sound & or graphics card.

Of course obtaining the proper CD would be the best thing.

This is just XP, so I tried to locate the registry subkey, but I am afraid I am too inexperienced. Just how do I locate it?

Thank you.

Locate the following registry subkey:
HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SYSTEM\CurrentControlSet\Servic es\RasMan\PPP\EAP

Delete the following registry keys under the EAP subkey:
25
26

Quit Registry Editor, and then restart your computer.

Re: Screen Resolution, Internet access w/XP

Go to start | run & type regedit

First off click File then Export. Export the registry to My Documents. This is a backup just in case. It can always be Imported back if something goes wrong.

Then:

Click the + next to HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE

Then click the + next to SYSTEM

etc. i.e. follow the path of + down the line:
HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SYSTEM\CurrentControlSet\Servic es\RasMan\PPP\EAP

Delete the following registry keys under the EAP subkey: (right click & choose delete)
25
26
Quit Registry Editor, and then restart your computer.

The very first thing to do online is to install XP SP2!!!
