Re: Processor fan on win xp runs all the time!
yeh, like brain damage said, it should be on all the time....
if it isnt always on your cpu will overheat, the fan shouldnt use up too nuch electricity anyway, as it is only a motor. its better your fan being on and using a tiny bit more electricity then having to pay at least £100 for a new processor.
or do you mean it is on when the pc is off?

The fan runs all the time. You can hear it in other rooms, its so loud! Even when I have my screensaver on, the fan runs louder. Is this normal? I know that the fan HAS to run at times to cool things down, but ALL the time? The fan only runs when the PC is on.

Had the same problem. Blow through all the vent ducts with compressed air and you will notice an immediate improvement.

Re: Processor fan on win xp runs all the time!
are you sure youre not getting mixed up with cd rom drive or the hard drive(s) as these can be noisy. make sure there is no CD rom in the drive to rule that out, and if it is still noisy, you could open your computer to clarify where the sound is comeing from (be careful not to touch anything on the motherboard as static electricity can damage components but generally it should be ok).
Fans are usualy verry quiet.
The only reason i can think of it making a noise is if there is an obstruction that it is hitting all the time

Has the fan always been noisy? We have one pc that has a really loud fan, it sounds like a jet aircraft taking off. It is one of those with the fan at the front of the machine.
