Deleting Pagefile.sys

There seems to be one file named 'Pagefile.sys' present in each of the 4 partitions i have made on my hard disk. When i look at the used and free space on each drive, i found out that there is at least 150 MB extra space occupied by this file. Since i have only 10 GB capacity, that 150 MB on each drive is proving to be too much.

I presently have approx 120 MB free space on drive C (also the drive on which Win XP is loaded) due to which i cant run the disk defragmentation (Of course the system allows me to run it, but a msg apperars that for optimal result, i should have more disk space on C).

Now i want to delete that cunning 'Pagefile.sys' file so that i can free up more space. But i am unable to find it (I think its a hidden file). Also is it neccessary that that file should exsist or else the OS wont work?

Please help. How can i delete that file?

Thanks and Regards
Nisar.

Re: Deleting Pagefile.sys

pagefile is a reserved portion of a hard disk that is used as an extension of random access memory (RAM)

Configuring -

A page file can be individually set for each drive by doing the following.

1. On the desktop, right click "My Computer"
2. Select "Properties" from the provided selection list.
3. Click the Advanced Tab on the top right of the window
4. Click the "Performance Options..." button
5. Click the Change button, the "Virtual Memory" window will open.

At this point you can select the drive from the provided list and then type in the amount of memory you want dedicated to the swap file in the provided text boxes. A box is provided for the initial size and the maximum size. Simply enter the amount and click the Set button.

Re: Deleting Pagefile.sys

Problems problems. I completely disabled the virtual memory, restarted the system and checked out the free disk space.

The disc space didnt change at all. Earlier it was 149 MB and even after restarting, its 149 MB. After checking the size of each folder on the C drive, i found that i should have at least 280 MB free space (I also checked the sizes of all the hiiden files).

Where did that extra 130 MB free space go?

Re: Deleting Pagefile.sys

This thread covers the page file quite well with additional links as well:

What you are seeing could well be the reserved space for a dump file.

In case of a crash XP allows the necessary space to "dump" the memory.

If you wish to turn off this allowance go to:

Right click My Computer then click Properties then Advanced then Startup and Recovery | Settings

Write debugging information: set to None. Also unclick Write an event to the system log

Also delete all your dump files .dmp

System Restore is also another possible source of used disk space. You can set the size allowance there via Properties | System Restore
