VX2 gone, but so is all the hardware and internet connections

Hi Guys, I have a laptop Presario 2200 with XP2 (not this machine) and on both my machines I have had a lot of ad.yieldmanager popups, so tonight I dl the Ad-aware VX2 fix and ran it. This machine cleaned up ok, no problem. But the other machine has major problems. It no longer recognises USB devices, WMPlayer, there are no printers (in fact in System/HardWare profiles there aren't any devices, just a blank screen). System restore has been wiped of all previous dates. Help & Support doesn't work because it says the service is not installed, but it looks it to me. I tried various startups in safe mode, nothing at all. The only other things I did tonight were turn on the ClearType options on both machines from the net and install something 'hex' on adware on the machine that doesn't work, I also uninstalled it. I tried last known good configuration. I have (I think) all the windows restore discs and the netopia router disc. This is my kid's machine. I hope you can help fix it for us.

The last time I was on this forum was because my machine (this one) kept typing 3s. Its been ok for ages. It started typing 3s again tonight. I could live with this, but not the other machine.

Went and back! Fast eh? I just remembered that I can't get to Help and Support to this, it tells me that I need to install the service. But Help and Support is in the start up Systems Config Utility. I have the machine doing a hard drive self test at the moment because I have to do something (while I sleep as I have to work tomorrow).

If not what disks do you have? Are they labeled?

I'm at work now, on my other machine. But I spent hours re-enabling and starting (what would) all the services which in msconfig had looked as though they started. The cd player worked so I reinstalled the router and got it online but then I had to come to work. So I will go to that site later when I get in.

Did you get the Help & Support download or did you just reinstall from your disks?

I just experimented for hours with different things, then I hit on the adminstrative tools and re-enabled and started everything, which didn't work until I re-enabled plug and play. I had to reinstall the router and will probably have to do it to my isbn scanner but its working ok now. Some browser settings were changed but no big deal. The threes and beeps are back again today... I had forgotten about them it was so many months. If I make some money this Christmas I want a new machine!
