Unmountable-boot-volume..how Do I Fix

[FONT=Impact]I Need Help ...my Pc Reads ( A Problem Has Been Detected And Windows Has Been Shut Down...to Prevent Damage To Your Pc.)

Then It Shows...( Unmountable-boot-volume)

How Do I Fix This Problem..i Am Learning Pc Repair..but I Am In The Early Stages....can Some One Walk Me Through A Way To Solve My Problem...

If you have a retail version of XP you can use the Recovery Console on the CD.

Try this:

When booting up to Win XP you may get a error that reads "Unmountable Boot Volume". This is probably because your boot.ini file is messed up.
So, what do you do about it, panic and try to mount your boot in your computer...... No that is probably not a good idea.

You can boot to the XP cd and when you see the Welcome to setup press the letter R
You will get a dos prompt
Then type "chkdsk /p" without the quotes and hit enter
When that is done type "fixboot" and hit enter
"Y" and enter at the prompt
Then type "exit" and hit enter
The system will now reboot into Windows

If for some reason that don't work for you, you can boot to the recovery console like above and...
Type "chkdsk /r" then enter
When done type "exit" and hit enter.
This will take longer, but the system should boot back into Windows.

If that fails try this:

To try to fix the boot:

Assuming that your XP is on C: then:

Type:

FIXMBR C:

then enter. After that completes type:

FIXBOOT C:

then enter. After that completes type:

BOOTCFG /rebuild

then enter. After that completes type:

EXIT

then reboot.

If in the process you are asked to run chkdsk say YES.

Also after the BOOTCFG /rebuild you will be prompted to:

C:\Windows
1. Add installation to boot list? (Yes/No/All):
2. Enter Load Identifier: (Custom description for an operating system loading from the Boot menu)
3. Enter Operating System Load Options: (that is: /fastdetect)

Reply:
1. Yes
2. XP
3. /fastdetect

If this fails you can run a Repair Install that will leave your data entact:

If your XP is an OEM version you need to check the manual or the computer manufacturers' web site for Recovery Options.

Another possibility outside of XP is a failing hard drive. If you know the manufacturer you can find their diagnostic listed here:

You are able to get into Safe Mode?

Does this mean that you no longer get the Unmountable-boot-volume error?

To awnser your exact question: (For either the Recovery Console or a Repair Install)

1. Make sure that the BIOS settings are set to boot the CD Drive prior to the Hard Drive.

2. Boot the XP CD. (As soon as you power on insert the CD).
