System Restore

Hi there,

I'm having so many problems with my PC at the moment it's not funny. I feel like banging my head against a wall as no one seems able to help me.

I hope someone here is clever enough to let me know what I'm doing.

My first major problem is that System Restore doesn't seem to be working at all.

Every time I click on it (and it's set to be on) it just reads - System Restore is not able to protect your computer. Restart the computer and then try again.

Of course I've tried to restart but it always says the same thing.

Please help!

Thanks

Shark

Re: System Restore

I can't actually disable system restore. It says that there has been an error trying to disable one of the drives.

I have now tried to look at System Restore through the Computer Management.

When I click on the Properties of System Restore it seems to say that it's STOPPED.

When I try to start it, it says - Error 998: Invalid access to memory location.

What's going on?!

Re: System Restore

You might want to sum up all your issues & how/ when they started.

System Restore issues are often virus & or malware issues.

You could try starting the service in safe mode. Here are other tips specific to System Restore:

http://www.google.com/search?hl=en&q...=Google+Search

http://bertk.mvps.org/html/srfail.html

The symptoms of your DVD/CD drive is also a common symptom with many possible sources including viruses & or malware. Especially with "an error trying to disable one of the drives."

If this error is repeated please post the error message verbatim.

The 998 error is possibly indicating that the registry has lost rstrui.exe

What happens when you: Start/Run/ %systemroot%\system32\restore\rstrui.exe

What about your anti-virus & firewall?

Have you made any hardware & or software changes etc.?

You also might want to go ahead & run a HijackThis log thru that section:

Please follow the instructions HERE & then post your log in a new thread in the Spyware, Adware, Viruses and HijackThis Logs section.
(Not in this section please).

Re: System Restore

Hi Jephree,

Thanks for your reply.

The system restore issue happened, I'm pretty sure, at the same time as a virus attack. I managed to sort the virus out but have been left with this system restore malfunction.

"What happens when you: Start/Run/ %systemroot%\system32\restore\rstrui.exe"

Basically nothing. It says the same thing "System Restore cannot protect your computer...".

How do I get rstrui.exe back if it's gone?

The DVD issue happened for seemingly no reason much later on. I can't put my finger on what must have changed but think it might be a registry issue which I don't know much about.

Am going to try getting System Restore sorted via your tips and will do the hijackthis and log it.

Many thanks

Shark

Re: System Restore

I have moved your hijackthis log to the Spyware, Adware, Viruses and HijackThis Logs board.
