Using Dell Dimension 4500 desktop, 512mb ram, 2.0 Pentium, XP Home.
When shutting off computer it says the programs are not responding, and I have to hit the End Now button on some of them in order to shut down the computer. How do I fix this? Gary
jephree, I tried everything I could from that site and also disabled all startup programs and shutdown still hangs with "program not responding" with all the programs trying to shutdown. I have to hit "end now" on each to shutdown. Any other ideas? Gary
Jephree, I just found the solution by googling it. I changed the registry according to the following instructions, and it now does not hang at shutdown. Thank you for helping me. Maybe this can help someone else, too. Here it is - Open Registry by going to START-RUN and typing REGEDIT. Navigate to HKEY_CURRENT_USER\CONTROL PANEL\DESKTOP and look for AutoEndTasks. On my computer default value is 0. Change it to 1. Thats all. Further more you can reduce the time it takes for Windows to issue kill directive to all active/hung applications. In doing this only constraint that you should make sure exists is that HungAppTimeout is greater than WaitToKillAppTimeout. Change the values of WaitToKillAppTimeout to say 3500 (since default value for HungAppTimeout 5000 and for WaitToKillAppTimeout is 20000)
Great! Thanks for the feedback! I'm sure we will refer to this as it is a common issue.
