msn on pc to msn on apple mac

Can anyone tell me if you have msn messenger on a pc running windows xp can you chat with someone on a apple mac using msn or do you need some special software? any help would be gratefully recieved.

i have done some research on this query and you should be able to do it but from the m,ac point of view you would have to download some software tools
