Windows File Protection

I have 4 partitions on my hard drive.

C: is almost empty
D: has WinXP files loaded in it.
E: has games
f: has Win98SE files loaded in it.

Yesterday, i was listening to songs on XP and at the same time running a Typing Practice software. Suddenly, i got this dialog box with 'Windows File Protection' written on its title bar.

The message read ' Files that are required to run windows properly have been replaced by unrecognised versions. To maintain system stability, Windows must restore the original versions of these files.'

It asked me for WinXP CD which i provided and i think the files were copied back successfully. Then i removed the CD and went ahead with the typing.

Today, when i tried to start WinXP, i got a blue screen just before the Logon screen stating that the system has been shut down. I dont quite remember the error number. I think the unrecognised files again replaced the original files of XP. What possibly can be the cause behind this?

I dont even connect to the internet with that PC, so i think theres no question of Sypware/Bugs/Virus causing it.

Alright, try re-installing it onto the C: drive. But during the fdisk, format both the C: and D: drives. Then install it onto the C: drive. Maybe you accidentally deleted the system files and they need to be copied again. Ok, try this instead, Go to the BIOS, make the first device to boot from, use the CD-ROM drive, then followed by the D: drive. Try this after you try the first one. Good luck

hopefully you didn't listen to me, don't fdisk, i misread and thought you had four differnt drives. Im really sorry, my friend pointed out my mistake.

So what is your current status? Sounds like what you were prompted to do with the XP CD equals running sfc /scannow. This System File Checker restores the original XP files that are in doubt. If the problem recurs I would question the software. Have you used these programs before? If the problem persists it might be expedient to run a Repair Install of XP. This will reinstall XP without affecting your programs or files. Here is a good guide to that process:

If you want to try to trace the exact error on the blue screen change this setting:

rt. click My Computer then click Properties then Advanced then Startup and Recovery Settings then unclick Automatically restart

This will freeze the screen on the error page.

I dont know what could have been the problem at first because i think its fixed now. I followed jakeyeager's solution. I formatted all my drives and then installed Win98 on C and WinXP on D. Now for the past 3 days, i am not getting any warning message.

I probably would have deleted those files at first as jakeyeager pointed out.
