CD-RW no longer recognized by Windows
I have XP Home with SP2.
My CD-ROM (RW) is no longer recognized by XP.
Device Manager says there is Driver problem - "Windows cannot load the
device driver for this hardware. The driver may be corrupted or missing.
Code 39)"
DM says the current Driver is Microsoft, 7/1/2001, 5.1.2535.0 .
My CR Drive is an LG,
IDE\CDROMHL-DT-ST_CD-RW_GCE-8526B________________1.03____\5&15FFB14F&0&0.0.0
I have no CD from LG with drivers (which would be of no use anyway).
I have seen similar problems on this site but the answers did not apply or work for me.

Re: CD-RW no longer recognized by Windows
Right click the drive under the Device Manager and Uninstall (the drive: not the driver) then reboot.
This should reload the drivers.

Re: CD-RW no longer recognized by Windows
Thanks, but that did not work. I did not get a 'New Hardware Found' message when I rebooted.
I have tried de-installing and then running the new hardware wizard before, but when it searched for a driver, it will fail, can't find driver...

Re: CD-RW no longer recognized by Windows
go to my computer and locate the CD-RW. Can you at least see the drive? How did you come to realize that you're drive was malfunctioning?

Re: CD-RW no longer recognized by Windows
1) I found out when I ran Realplayer and it said that no CD drive was detected, and My Computer does not show the CD Drive.
2) Have I checked the cables? No, but I presume you mean internal to my PC tower, correct? If the cable for the drive is loose (or disconnected entirely), would Device Manager still show it? Anyway, I will check the internals after this session...

See if this helps:
Quote:
Restore Missing CD Drive
http://aumha.org/downloads/cdgone.zip
[[The popular CDGONE patch. CD drives may vanish in Windows Explorer, Device
Manager, etc. if a third-party CD-burning package has been uninstalled and
Registry references for some code modules aren’t removed successfully. This
patch and a reboot usually will restore the missing drives. Any third party
package still required will then have to be re-installed. For more
information on this and other possible causes, see the “Problems” section of
Alex Nichol’s Burning CDs in Windows XP article.]]

Re: CD-RW no longer recognized by Windows
RE: CDGONE
I have both Realplayer and Nero, but have not uninstalled either one. My initialries at the MS Support pages turned up a document with a similar issue and situation. It recommended editing the Registry to remove two 'entries', presumably left behind when burn software was removed? Well, I have no such entries in my registry...
by & by, does anyone have the Backup Utility that is recommended for backing up the Registry? Apparently its on my XP cds somewhere, which does not help me at the moment. I would like to get it since I am OK with viewing the Registry, but have never changed it.
...but if I do use the above "cd dvd fix.htm', then I suppose I will not need to edit the registry. Before I use the fix, is it assuming the situation where burn s/w was uninstalled? or does it care?

Re: CD-RW no longer recognized by Windows
Me again...
1) jephree, thanks for the links to the Registry Backup, I may be using them soon, because...
2) I tried 'cd dvd fix.htm', and my CD drive is still missing in action.. but I have not tried the other two links in that message. Are they different in some way? Anyway, I will try another one soon... or I will first check the cables as brain_damage suggested; I just need to get my Warcraft-playing offspring away from the computer long enough to do it...
Anyway, thanks to all for your input, I will try a few more things and let you know how it all turns out, probably about this time tomorrow.
