Question bugcheck error and other questions

Hi all

I use windows XP Pro, version 2002 . I have not downloaded any service packs (1 and 2).
I am confused reading that so many people have more problems when they download them. Is that true?

My problems and questions:

1. System reboots. Event viewer reports that during a bugcheck an error happens. The error quite often is
0x00000012. Microsoft
(http://windowssdk.msdn.microsoft.com...ason_codes.asp)
describes the reason as 'Security Patch'.
Please can sby explain to me what this is and how and if I can get rid of it so that my (brand new) PC stops
rebooting all of a sudden? Can sudden reboots cause damage to my PC?

I also found a Microsoft page about Debugging tools for windows.
http://www.microsoft.com/whdc/devtoo...nstallx86.mspx

What are these?
If I install them, could they help me with my problem?

2. I get an error message about infrared.
Device Manager writes that it is 'an Infrared device - Internal port'.

So the error I get quite often is:

source: irevents
category: Irftp
Type: Error
Event ID: 8205
File name: irmon.dll
file version: 5.1.2600.0

"description:
the infrared file transfer service encountered an error while checking for configuration changes.
Changes made from the Wireless Link control panel will not take effect until next loggon session.
The error reported was 6."

I have disabled the infrared from Device manager, but I am still getting the problem.

Can sby pls. give me replies in simple English?!

Thanks

Re: bugcheck error and other questions

Brand new PC? Was XP pre-installed? Or did you load it?

First off go to Windows Update and download all Critical Updates.

This will include SP2 and nearly two years of subsequent updates.

The bugs were with third party applications and were worked out.

Especially if this is a new computer there should be no conflicts.

Being online without these updates is dangerous.

The Debugging Tools are sometimes helpful in tracking persistent blue screen errors but at this point they are not necessary as they do take quite a bit of disk space.

irmon.dll could quite possibly be looking for changes incorporated in the Service Packs. It could also be triggering the 012.

By its very nature, this error means that the cause of the identified problem is unknown. Start with the General Troubleshooting of STOP Messages checklist above. Read the MSDN article linked here. Especially try to track it down by noting the history of the problem, when it appeared, and what changes were made to the system since the problem first appeared, as well as noting what activity you are attempting at the time the error message appears.

Re: bugcheck errors

Hi Jephree and thanx for the very fast reply.

XP was pre-installed in my PC when i bought it. The shop I bought it from did it. Is this bad? I have downloaded all critical updates except for SP1 and SP2. I have read (many internet posts) that they can do more damage to the pc than good. As I am just a user, I am kinda scared with all this...

Anyway, thanks a lot for explaining that the problem has to do with my not having SP2. At least now I know. Thanks also for the site ref.

Re: bugcheck error and other questions

What type of XP disk did the shop give you? That is the important question.

In my opinion being online without SP1 is like driving blind. Your machine will become infected; just a matter of time. Being online without SP2 is more like driving without a seatbelt: obviously not as critical as driving blind but you can assess your own risk. If you're a safe surfer you probably don't need it. But most subsequent updates depend on it as base. As mentioned most of the bugs were with third party softwares and most if not all were worked out.

Please post any further errors and we can try to trace the exact issue.

I have McAfee Security center on, plus Spybot, plus Ad-aware, so I hope I am not driving blind!

DAL help service is great, so thanks and keep up the good work!
