Unhappy default settings

?? I set my computer up to speak to me in German, and this is not working out for me because my german is not good enough. Do I need to run setup again to change the language? If so, how? (The computer came with windows xp already on it, so I do not have a separate Windows CD-ROM.). The other thing is that I changed the settings somehow so that nothing fits on the screen. My desktop icons have become tiny, my skype opens somewhere off the screen.... and my address field is no longer anywhere to be found.... is there anyone who knows how (regardless of whether I reconfigure the computer) I can return it to default settings? If someone tells me how to do this on an english-speaking computer, then I will figure it out on my german-speaking computer.

Re: default settings

Welcome to D-A-L

Not sure what you mean by "I set my computer up to speak to me in German".

If you mean that you have the German version of XP installed then you would need to purchase an English version. They are two different products.

If you meant otherwise pardon my confusion and please elaborate on what you have done.

Your screen resolution can be adjusted via start Control Panel | Display | Settings

If XP was pre-installed you should still have either an OEM Recovery CD or there should be a Recovery partition on your Hard Drive.
What is the make and model of the computer?

Re: default settings

also, the computer is no longer allowing me to go into standby mode. (When I go to start-> shut down, only two options are active: restart or shut down.)

Re: default settings

When I turned the computer on for the first time and set it up (without a disk), it gave me the option to choose what language the computer will speak and I chose German. It also told me that this can never be changed (unless I run the setup again, or so I am told). This means that all the menus are given to me in German. Since the computer is relatively new and I do not have very much saved on it, I would not mind running setup again if necessary.

I know about the screen resolution thing, but how do I make it all go back to factory settings?

(Your screen resolution can be adjusted via start Control Panel | Display | Settings)

I have a recovrey CD. My computer is an ASUS Notebook PRO60R.

Three other problems I am having are: A. I am no longer given an option to make the computer standby. When I go to the start menu and choose shut down, only two options are active: shut down or restart. Also, the first couple of times I shut down there was a four-colored shield on the shut down button and now there is not.

B. My battery is not charging at all and the computer turns itself off the second the electricity is disconnected. Most of the time the battery indicator light flashes on and off, and the control panel tells me that it is not recharging. If I take the battery out and put it back in, then the indicator light is on steadily for 30-60 minutes, and it tells me it is recharging, but after this period of time, it flashes again.

C. My caps-lock key locks also the numbers and punctuation symbols into shift mode. This is the only computer I know of that does this.

Re: default settings

Is this a new computer? Still under warranty?

I looked at the manual and it mentions the language setup. You are correct that you would have to set it up again to change languages. The disk they gave you only has the BIOS and drivers on it. The manual says if you require a full recovery CD you need to contact ASUS or your retailer.

The manual will not allow copy/paste so sorry I cannot quote but here it is:

http://dlsvr03.asus.com/pub/ASUS/nb/...33_A6UKVRJ.pdf

More info here:

http://support.asus.com/download/dow...Language=en-us

I would recommend a fresh install/setup but you will need to get the CD.

Re: default settings

The computer is still under warranty. I took it to a branch of the store where I bought it and they sent it back to the place of purchase in order to fix the battery problem. When that is done, the technician here in Vienna will help me to re-run setup.

The only question remaining is: why does this computer hear me so much worse than any other I have used? Do laptops hear worse in general, or is there a program I need to install?

Re: default settings

Sorry for my confusion but now I am guessing that by saying talk and hear you are using voice recognition?

I have never used this but will do some research.
