crazy desktop

I have always arranged desktop items manually to suit my convenience, but recently they have started to change places randomly despite autoarrange and align to grid being ticked. What can I do about this?

Have they been moving in one general area or across the desktop to the opposite side?

Thanks, Jakeyeager, they have moved around on the grid within the original shape of the group of icons.

Have you got iconid installed? If not you may have a corrupt profile.

Thanks HappyBeaver I haven't got iconid installed. What does a corrupt profile imply? How can I pin-point that? What can I do about it, please?

Do you have another user account on this machine?

If so is the behavior the same?

If not then create a new account as a test to see if the desktop will behave.
