Unable to run systems recovery disc

Hello very grateful for any help please.

My PC came down with a virus on Sunday, it kept freezing and wouldn't allow me to run the anti virus software I have. I tried system restore but this didn't work so as a last resort I tried to run the systems recovery disc. It came up with an error
message saying cannot open Ghosterr.txt, cannot read file and now I cannot get back into Windows at all!

Any ideas on how to fix this?

What is the make and model of the computer?

What disk are you using?

Re: Unable to run systems recovery disc

Unfortunately that brand is hard to research. I get this statement:

"This section contains information on the Advent computers sold by the Dixons Stores Group (Dixons, Currys, and PC World). These machines are DSG's own brand machines and are made by a variety of different manufacturers."

I would try running the Recovery CD again. Have you read the manual for the proper actions?

Unless the Recovery process incorporates Norton Ghost I don't see why it is even looking for Ghosterr.txt which anyway is basically just an error log for Norton Ghost.

Let us know if the error repeats. Are you booting this Recovery disk?

Re: Unable to run systems recovery disc

Hi thanks for the info.

I tried to run the recovery CD again last night, got as far as 16% and got the same error message...i've had the advent for 5 years, time for a new PC I think.

Re: Unable to run systems recovery disc

Is this a boot disk?

If you try again could you please post back the error message verbatim.

You might also try the Microsoft 6 floppy boot setup. If this works you might then be able to run your CD or else perhaps repair the old boot via the Recovery Console.

How to obtain Windows XP Setup boot disks

If you cannot boot into Windows I would suggest first trying the Recovery Console:

http://support.microsoft.com/default...b;EN-US;307654

To try to fix the boot:

Assuming that your XP is on C: then:

Type:

FIXMBR C:

then enter. After that completes type:

FIXBOOT C:

then enter. After that completes type:

BOOTCFG /rebuild

then enter. After that completes type:

EXIT

then reboot.

If in the process you are asked to run chkdsk say YES.

Also after the BOOTCFG /rebuild you will be prompted to:

C:\Windows
1. Add installation to boot list? (Yes/No/All):
2. Enter Load Identifier: (Custom description for an operating system loading from the Boot menu)
3. Enter Operating System Load Options: (that is: /fastdetect)

Reply:
1. Yes
2. XP
3. /fastdetect
