Unhappy Computer freezes on starting...help!

Hi,hope someone can help me.

My trusty pc has started hanging/freezing on the black screen when i turn it on.
pic
Never done that before, but now it's really bad.........had to re start it at least 13 times before it would fire up today.
I've cleared all my files/cookies.....virus scanned etc......still the same
Was thinking of re installing my original xp disk.

Anyone got any ideas? Cheers

Bye the way, i'm running Win XP Home ( sp 1 )

can you start it in safe mode?

Thanks for your help,

I can boot into safe mode...........but then i still don't know how to fix the problem, i'm such a dumb ***....lol
Last known good configeration is the same as 'start normally'...it still hangs.

New hardware :
Got a new printer recently( Epson stylus DX4800 ..which is a USB connection )....should i un plug it..when not in use?

Also i'll take the computer case apart 2mor, to check for dust etc ( could dust cause this prob?!! )

Cheers, Dave

Re: Computer freezes on starting...help!

Check your Event Viewer and Error logs for possible errors:

Also: look in your Event viewer: rt. click My Computer then click Manage then Event Viewer.
Or: Administrative Tools/Event Viewer or Start/Run/ eventvwr
Open the system as well as the application tabs & look for X errors. Click error line for details.
Post back the source & event id & Description especially of errors that seem to coincide with this issue.
Also check the Information lines that might coincide with this issue.

How to view and manage event logs in Event Viewer in Windows XP

Also view your Error Log via:

[1] Start Menu
[2] Help and Support
[3] Pick a Task
[4] Tools
[5] Advanced System Information
[6] View the Error Log

Look for any synchronous entries.

Also do you have an XP CD or was XP pre-installed (OEM)?

If the latter what is the exact make and model of the computer?

Re: Computer freezes on starting...help!

Hi,

I checked Event viewer and i get a lot of red X's
I'd copy + paste but it's a huge page!

and yes, I have my original XP Home installation disk.
Should i re install XP ( hopefully retaining all my current files/docs/pics etc )?

thanks, Dave

Re: Computer freezes on starting...help!

As a worse case you can Repair Install which saves your settings and programs... but first let's look at some errors.

Start under the System tab.

You will note the time. Pick a time that you tried to boot normally and then look for errors at that time.

You will probably find that many errors repeat. Many are benign.

Under the Action tab you can create a text file and edit it.

Also check the Help and Support log for similar matches. This is a more selective list of hard-core errors.

Re: Computer freezes on starting...help!

Here is a good guide:

http://michaelstevenstech.com/XPrepairinstall.htm

It is urged to back up any valuable data. You will then need to reinstall the Service Pack 2 and subsequent Updates from Windows Update.

I have never had any problems with a Repair Install retaining all my settings and programs but please read all the data and balance the info with the sensitivity of your data.
