problem with video controller Code 28

Hi,

I have XP professional. I can't play DVD's. I did a check and it came up "Video Controller (VGA compatible) problem code 28."

I went to the Device Manager and tried a reinstall but the driver is not compatible for XP (as per microsoft window that appeared).

Any idea on what I can do.

Thanks,
Ray

Re: problem with video controller Code 28

Is this a new problem? Were things working OK previously? Any new hardware and or software?

What program do you use for DVD's?

One try is to uninstall your DVD player via the Device Manager and then reboot.

XP should reload the drivers it wants.

Hi Jephree,

You helped me out on one or two things recently. I had problems with playing a DVD when I first got computer a couple of months ago (computers about a year old). There was a pirated version of Microsoft XP which I didn't know about and about a week ago I got the legal version direct from Microsoft.

I'm using Windows Media Player.

I'll try your uninstall, etc. idea and I'll let you know what happens.

Thanks,
Ray

Re: problem with video controller Code 28

Hi Jephree,

I tried the uninstall and then rebooted. When I rebooted an MS window appeared stating: "The softwareyou are installing for this hardware SiS650 has not passed Windows Logs testing to verify its compatibility with Windows XP...Could impair or destabalize the connect up of your system...Microsoft strongly reccomend stopping install and contact hardware vendor for software that has passed Windows Log Testing."

So I clicked "Do Not Install".

Any ideas what I should do now. By the way before I posted my original message I did research on MS Help but could not find an answer (apart from -- getting in touch with hardware vendor -- but I don't know who that is).

Any ideas?

Thx
Ray

Re: problem with video controller Code 28

XP within itself does not have the capability of DVD playback or burning. You need third party software to do that. However if this is not the issue then I would try to install whatever drivers are being prompted.

SiS650 is apparently your graphics chip. Either on-board or on a card. I am not clear why it is signaled out for the DVD drive.

I would create a System Restore point and then install what is prompted. (Over the advice of MS).

If other issues arise or if this does not help the problem then use the System Restore point and we can try other solutions.
