not sure why it would be incompatible/damaged ram, but if it is when doing tasks that require more 'energy' and it cant access the other stick of ram....
try removing the new stick, see if you still get the problem (dont think it would be the ram but its worth a try)
also, check for overheating (preferably the CPU or graphics card) when running your computer.
do you mean the screen shows the application you were using last with lines through it? or the screen goes black with lines through it?
