"Cannot read from source file or disk"

I have been trying to delete some duplicate photos and I get this error message - "Cannot delete file: Cannot read from source file or disk"- on about 10% of them.

Let me back up - Usually I transfer my pictures to a temp folder on my PC by using a card reader and a Windows wizard (forget its actual title.) This worked wonderfully for me until lately. It used to first give me the option of NOT transferring some and then it does its thing. At the end I would click "Finish" and it would open a window for me to review them. I would then move them to various folders in thr "My Pictures" folder.

Now it seems to be duplicating pictures. Today it said it was transferring 375 pics! I only had 144 on my camera! (Which is why I was trying to delete the extras) - BUT also they do not appear in the temp folder under My Pictures like they used to. The only way to find them is through "Search" - I tried that today too - had it search for all pictures at first - my goodness it showed 7400 or so! I KNOW I don't have that many pics by no stretch of the imagination! And looking at them, I saw many many duplicates! Still I was doing the deleting in the Search results window because that's the only way to locate them. And the reason for me trying to locate them in the first place is that today when it showed it was going to transfer 375 pics - it gave me an error that it couldn't finish because the disk was full! Gee whiz - I have a 1 GB memory and have only had this PC for less than 6 months - I haven't done THAT much on it!

What the heck is going on? This PC is majorly screwed up! I need to do a complete reformat but that means $$$$$$$ to buy the real installation disks for XP (recovery disks from HP won't work, using the recovery D drive won't work - nothing works!) I'm at my wits end with this $1000 paperweight of mine!

Re: "Cannot read from source file or disk"

Not meaning to side step your issues (have read your other thread too) but the first question I want to ask is what about the warranty?

Should not your retailer and or HP be responsible for fixing this machine?

It's a rainy night in Florida
