booting probs

I was on the internet last night and the suddenly the screen went off and there was a message monitor is ok but chk pc and signal cable...so I turned the mains power off then turned it back on..it turned on automatically and sounded like it was booting but the power light was constatly clashing as was the lights on the keyboard,scanner and the infra red on my mouse, and that same message was coming on the monitor, can you help pls

what is the message?

have you recently connected any new hardware or installed new software?

remove all external components apart from monitor, keyboard and mouse... do you still get the error screen?
