Weird Symbols On Screen

My laptop display started to braek up and wird symbols started replacing real ones.
tried to reboot in safe mode but hearts and smiley face characters covering most of the screen
Tried a repair but same problem with the display so can't see what to do

Any help or light on the problem much needed and appreciated

What exactly did you do when you "Tried a repair"?

hi

chose r on the options after inserting the xp disc. unfortunately the weird characters appear even on the bluescreen so it was difficult.

did a chkdsk /r but this did not work esp as i can not read 3/4 of the screen

Is the BIOS screen clear? Does this only start with Windows?

Can you try a System Restore from Safe Mode?

This can also be done with the Command prompt by typing:

%SystemRoot%\System32\restore\rstrui.exe


If you want to try a Repair Install of XP boot the CD but do not press R but Enter the XP Setup as seen here:
