Explorer Runtime Error

On my computer everytime I try to browse a folder on my second hard drive I get this popup:

Microsoft Visual C++ Runtime Library

Runtime Error!

Program: C:\WINDOWS\EXPLORER.EXE

This application has requested the Runtime to terminate in an unusual way.
Please contact the application's support team for more information.

Any ideas/suggestions?

Re: Explorer Runtime Error

Is this a new problem? Were things working OK previously? Any new hardware or software?

If this is a new problem try a System Restore to a point prior to the problem:

start > All Programs > Accessories > System Tools > System Restore

If that doesn't help look in your Event viewer: rt. click My Computer then click Manage then Event Viewer.
Or: Administrative Tools/Event Viewer or Start/Run/ eventvwr
Open the system as well as the application tabs & look for red X errors. Click error line for details.
Post back the source & event id & Description especially of errors that seem to coincide with this issue.
Also check the Information lines that might coincide with this issue.

How to view and manage event logs in Event Viewer in Windows XP

If you see any error details such as EVENT_SHELL_RESTARTED then:

Try this little app:

http://www.snapfiles.com/get/shellexview.html

First off see what items come up red tagged or pink.

Another common trigger to this error is Google Toolbar. If you have it remove it.

If none of the above helps then:

As a first response you might want to post a HijackThis log for review by our Pros in that section:

Please follow the instructions HERE & then post your log in a new thread in the Spyware, Adware, Viruses and HijackThis Logs section.

(Not in this section please).

Please specify what issues you appear to be experiencing along with your log.

Re: Explorer Runtime Error

Yes, this is a new problem.

I skipped doing a system restore since I haven't put in any new hardware or software since awhile before this started.

However when I went to the Event Viewer there were quite a few errors, the latest one in System happened awhile ago and after generating the error again I didn't see a new one. However this is the information from it:

Code:
The browser service has failed to retrieve the backup list too many times on transport \Device\NetBT_Tcpip_{F626F916-D7A8-4C8F-9CF4-1D355D5217D5}. The backup browser is stopping.

For more information, see Help and Support Center at http://go.microsoft.com/fwlink/events.asp.
Source was Browser event was 8032.

Re: Explorer Runtime Error

I would suggest a System Restore.

If that doesn't help run the HijackThis by the Pros over in that section.

Re: Explorer Runtime Error

Alright,

I did a system restore and that fixed the problem until I tried to set the folder to list everything in Alphabetical order and the error came straight up. So I suppose I'll go do HijackThis

Re: Explorer Runtime Error

If they say that you're all clear then come back to this thread and we can look further.

Re: Explorer Runtime Error

Solved this exact same problem by unchecking (=fixing) nzdd.dll in HijackThis...so what's nzdll.dll?

nzdd.dll file information

The process RealDownload or Main Module or Netzip Download Demon Module belongs to the software RealDownload or main Module or Netzip Download Demon Module Module by RealNetworks, Inc (www.realnetworks.com) or NetZIP, LLC or NetZIP, Inc.

Description: File nzdd.dll is located in the folder C:\Windows\System32. Known file sizes on Windows XP are 1150976 bytes (89% of all occurrence), 880640 bytes, 1060864 bytes, 856064 bytes.
This .dll file is a Browser Helper Object (BHO) that runs automatically every time you start your Internet browser. BHOs are not stopped by personal firewalls, because they are identified by the firewall as your browser itself. BHOs are often used by adware and spyware. The unique ID of this BHO is EBCDDA60-2A68-11D3-8A43-0060083CFB9C. The program is not visible. The file is an unknown file in the Windows folder. It is able to change the behavior or monitor the Internet Explorer. The service has no detailed description. The file is not a Windows core file. nzdd.dll is able to record inputs. Therefore the technical security rating is 73% dangerous, however also read the users reviews.
