Memtest86 won't run in XP

Hi

Trying to test my RAM, I burned the memtest86-3.2.iso onto my CD and its there at 1.75MB as I see it.

I configured my BIOS for booting on CD (it works usually) and rebooted. When it searched for the CD and checked its booting files, it automatically booted into the IDE 0 =Master harddrive instead! Its like it finds nothing on it.

Its happened 8 times now.

Help would be much appreciated.

Re: Memtest86 won't run in XP

Are you sure that you burned the ISO and not just copied the files?

A couple ways to tell: there should be an ISO icon on the drive when inserted and also in the properties. The properties as well should show 100% full. There should be no files listed per se although the size of the ISO will be indicated. No matter how large or small it will fill 100% of the disk as it is an image on the whole disk.

Just checking as this is a common error if you have not burned ISO's before.

"Are you sure that you burned the ISO and not just copied the files?"
Yes, I remember the burning procedure quite fully. In Nero 6.6 I remember clicking "Burn" in the corner.

I remember it reading buffer, and burn process and when I looked at the speed (8x) I felt bad, lol

But no its not been burned on. For some reason the iso image is not there and neither is the drive 100% full or anywhere near that.

This is the problem I guess. I'm trying it again.

Thanks!

Re: Memtest86 won't run in XP

I have Nero Express.

There you need to choose Disk Image

You cannot just Burn the ISO as you would a CD.

No its not.

When I burn it using Nero Express, Disk Image, Burn - data verify, all is coming out correct. The files burned are are two. Ones an image.

The files are 1.75MB and the freespace on the CD in properties is 0 MB

When I reboot, nothing is picked up and so my system boots to the harddrive OS.

Then when I checkup after rebooot, the files are the same and same size BUT the diskspace is now 642Mb available with 2MB used up!!

???? Whats this all about?

Re: Memtest86 won't run in XP

Yes I've just tried it again and now its showing zero diskspace but will not bootup.

When the system searches for CD boot files it just finds nothing and moves on.

I can't believe I'm now having this petty problem after getting the others sorted!!!

Argggggh

Re: Memtest86 won't run in XP

Are you using the same CD? If so did you format it?

If not I would try that first or else another new CD.

Re: Memtest86 won't run in XP

Yes its a new CD, untouched. The last CD I got from the pack is the one I installed XP SP2 off from, perfectly.

I didn't format but rewrote on top.

Heregoes.

Thumbs up Re: Memtest86 won't run in XP

Perfect!

Thanks Jephree, a true star

A new CD it had to be because I only had some CD-Rs free here. And it worked.

I only ran it for 2hr30min and by then it had 3 passes and 0 errors

I think thats pretty good.

I have one question and then you can lock the thread...

The 8GB/s for the L1 cache, the 3.5GB/s for the L2 and the 380MB/s for the RAM: what does all that mean, any idea's?

If so, how do I increase that (possible)?

Thanks
