Re: problems with windows update

Here is a quick search that we can browse together:

http://www.microsoft.com/communities...xp=&sloc=en-us

You might see some issues particular to your situation that I would not.

Microsoft issues updates on the second Tuesday of every month.

As of now only XP SP2 is supported for updates.

Re: problems with windows update

IT does that for me too. And it also caused massive errors stopping other applications, my shutdown was too slow (15 minutes sometimes), and I was unable to get any updates - it just totally messed by computer up.

Solution: I always get updates manually and have turned off automatic updates.

There was an update early November, yes. There have been updates for Windows Media Player aswell.

Alternatively you can check here for what you don't have of the updates (not exhaustive but up-to-date): http://www.softwarepatch.com/windows/

Re: problems with windows update

Well not exactly because mine isn't a Dell. Mine was a custom build. The problem is with Windows Updates for too many people I know.

The updates modify regsitry and unless you have the executables, I don't think you can copy anything over at all.

All of your "Updates" to Windows XP, Windows Media Player, .NET are registered in your registry & can check under: HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SOFTWARE\Microsoft\Updates\Wind owsXP\SP3\

The Hotfixes will be under: HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SOFTWARE\Microsoft\Windows NT\CurrentVersion\Hotfix\

That is where they are enumerated. Obviously, Control Panel > Add/Remove Programs (show updates) and Belarc can also do the same job

I'm not entirely sure, but I don't think there is a way for you to actually copy/move over your existing updates onto another HDD via a CD/DVD. Mainly because they are integrated inside, modify the registry etc but I'm not sure at all.

The only thing I reckon you can do is download the updates executables and burn them onto a CD/DVD using this program you say, which obviously allows them to run as a "Combination installation" rather than a stand-alone.

Re: problems with windows update

nLite is a free program for slipstreaming and customizing XP with Service Packs and Updates as well as editing out parts of XP that you do not want.

It basically creates a new XP disk (ISO) by combining your original disk with downloaded updates.

http://www.msfn.org/articles.php?act...showarticle=49

It sort of sounds like isaacual69 already has a similar program.

And just by the way: I have never had an issue with Windows Updates.
In my humble opinion these issues as with so many depend on the condition of the underlying operating system.

Thanks.

But mine was a new installation on a new HDD that worked perfectly for 3 weeks before this problem?!

Stumps me and I've done a repair reinstall as well.

Re: problems with windows update

I'll tell you another thing that solved my problem and a few others with application errors aswell: I moved the ntdll.dll from C:\WINDOWS\system32\ and automatically, because its a Windows protected File, another one is created. Once that happened, my computer worked perfect. For some reason, SFC /scannow didn't fix this obvious corruption.

Re: problems with windows update

You can download the guide from here and it'll explain all: http://www.nliteos.com/nlite.html

Basically you just choose each option in the Window where they are all listed (you can choose more than one) and then Browse for the hotfixes and proceed.
