yes, a router is best for this... what ISP are you on?
there are a few types or fouters:
1) wired router- Ideal for if you already have an ethernet modem and you do not wish to move your laptop around whilst on the internet and your desktop and laptop are fairly close together (2 power supplies are required- one for modem, one for router)
2) wired modem router- this shares your broadband connection via its built-in modem, you do not need a seperate modem and you only need one power supply, again, it is ideal if you dont mind cables traveling around and your computers are close together
3) wireless router- Generally, you will need an ethernet modem, this shares your internet connection with no wires... normally there is at least 1 ethernet jack to connect a wired computer so therefore, you can use one wired and one wireless
4) wireless modem router- similar to the wireless router but with a built-in modem- only one power supply needed.
