windows media player 10 wont play dvds

alright so i had all working good all files were playing fine and then..again...i go to change my theme or a setting that requires windows to stop with a little blue window in the middle of the screen saying please wait (like when applying a new theme) and then i go to windows media player 10 to play a movie or video file and it puts the file in red saying that cannot play file codec not found (for the video files) and either "cannot play dvd copy protected, or "required plug in missing...why does this do it...its happened too much and im ready to say the hell with the program and remove it through add/remove systme components..any suggestions cause i really like to use it because i can use it for everything pretty much, and it updates my library with thumbs so if i can resolve this it would be great..if not then looks like nero showtime will get all the use....thanks in advance for the help

Re: windows media player 10 wont play dvds

I would suggest reinstalling your DVD playing software.

Re: windows media player 10 wont play dvds

Nero is fine then. If it is a problem with the Codec you need to reinstall the software.

XP cannot play DVD's. It needs third party software. So I guess you have Nero installed?

Re: windows media player 10 wont play dvds

yes i do have nero installed...but how was wmp10 playing dvds then...was it getting the third party codec from another program that i have..if so why would it stop but still work with nero...maybe cause it belongs to nero?...and one last thing..im fine with letting wmp10 go, if i can still update my thumbs for the cds i have...say i create a folder that says 2 pac, then inside that i create another folder that says still i rise (as an album of his, i then rip the cd using expstudio cd ripper and save the songs in the folder, is there a program thats free that will take that folder and search for the album info and give me a thumb or picture for that cd like wmp10 did for me?...thank you again

Re: windows media player 10 wont play dvds

WMP 10 most likely used your Nero software.

You could try either reinstalling Nero or reinstalling WMP 10 or upgrade to WMP 11.

I can only guess that the settings you changed had some effect of file associations perhaps.

Also try this tool and see what it has to say:
