Antivirus and Adware software

Hi there, haven't been on here for a while but you guys kindly helped me lots last year as I had lots of problems on my computer. After some recommendations and suggestions on this forum, I installed the Avast antivirus software and also some adware software, think it might have been spybot (not sure). Any how, after various other problems on my pc I have had to start from scratch and re-install my Windows XP software so I have lost everything else. Just wanted an update on the antivirus software and adware I should now reinstall, is Avast the best one and what about adware software, which is the best to install? Any other security software I should install?

AVG free is what I use for an anti-virus.

As to spyware all you need is Spybot S&D and Adaware S&E. Both are linked to and described in this post:

Spyware Blaster is a background tool that is also very good.
