LAN Connected but no Internet
Hi.
I have just bought a new pc for the office at my business. I'm not very computer literate so please bear with me!
With the old computer, I plugged in the LAN cable and the internet worked straight away. The internet comes from a 4 port router and I am number 1 on the ports.
Anyway, I setup my new PC today, and when I plugged in the LAN cable it said it was connected to local area network @ 100mbps but I have no internet, when I double click IE7 it loads up for ages and then says "page cannot be displayed"
I was expecting it to just connect to the internet straight away. If I try to ping 192.168.1.1 from the computer which doesn't have internet (new one) I just get "request timed out" 4 times. I have checked the computers attached to port 2 and port 3 of the router (4th is xbox) and they are all the same as the new computer:- No Username or Password and all automatic detect network settings.
Anyone have any ideas whats going on??
Thanks,
Alex
P.S - All the computers are XP, a mix of Home and Pro.

Re: LAN Connected but no Internet
Hi
With any system, you have to setup the hardware.
Same here: you will have to setup the Router on the system- usually a CD with its drivers to install it.
Then go through setting it up using the Add Hardware Wizard found in Control Panel (if the computer doesn't detect and start it automatically)
Then you'll need to enter all the required details from your ISP for your net connection in the router configuration.
After that LAN will work.

Re: LAN Connected but no Internet
Hi Kazna3,
I don't recall having to setup the router on the old PC, so what do I have to do??
Insert Router Disc > Install Router on PC > All will be working??
The router disc simply says all it has on it is "Hardware Manuals" and also the router is already working on another 2 PC's, so surely its setup okay and is just a matter of plugging into the RJ45 port?
I have installed the network adaptor on my PC and in Device Manager it reports it is working fine with no errors and that it is enabled. I can connect to the network okay, just not internet. All the other PC's connected to router can connect to network and internet fine.
Cheers for reply.

Re: LAN Connected but no Internet
Have you checked your firewall isn't blocking access?

Re: LAN Connected but no Internet
Hey,
Thanks for the reply, I have gone into the firewall page and it is on, but iexplore.exe and my anti-virus are on the exception list. On the Network Connections page it shows my connection as firewalled and comes up with a security method if I try to disable it. Is there a network program that controls the ethernet port that I need to put in the exceptions list??
Cheers,
Alex

Re: LAN Connected but no Internet
What firewall are you running? Is it the xp one?
I don't recall having to add a network programme that controls the port to the list.
Have you tried temporarily disabling the firewall?

Re: LAN Connected but no Internet
Hi,
Yeh, its the windows firewall, there may be one built in to the router but I have never set anything up regarding this and it worked ok on the old PC.
I have disabled the firewall - much to the delight of Windows, but it didn't make a difference
I'm wondering whether the newer/safer security of XP is somehow blocking access to network. The old PC was Win 2k. I do have other XP SP2 computers running on this network fine, but this latest one is SP2b - could that be the problem??
Cheers for your replies.

Have you run the network setup wizard?

Re: LAN Connected but no Internet
I have the exact same problem at my workplace with our LAN as alexgray104 has described. There are several computers, all Windows XP, which are working on a LAN that goes through a router to a DSL connection for Internet access.
One of the computers has started having a problem accessing the Internet today, whereas in the past it had no problem on this same network. It is used here every day. The computer is still able to interact with other computers over the LAN, all our shared files between computers still work, but when trying to load a web page, IE reports "could not display the webpage."
All other computers are having no problem getting Internet access, in fact, I'm using one of them to post this message. In regards to the question about having used the Network Setup Wizard, I have run that utility on the computer, and rebooted, without any change except that now it keeps asking us which dialup modem connection to use. I checked the option for it to never try to use dialup so as to end that, but we still have the problem of no Internet access. I looked at IP settings for the ethernet adapter, it's all good, set to DHCP.
I have also checked the IE connection settings to make sure it's set to "automatically detect settings". From what I understand, given that we do have a good Internet connection, since all other computers on the same router see the Internet, and we know we're connected to the LAN on the problem computer, because we can still access other shares on the LAN, Windows should be automatically detecting and setting up the connection.
Thanks in advance for any help.
