Unhappy woodnut

after a cd has been read (both a blank cd or one that has data) I sometimes get the blue screen and a memory dump. The computer will re-boot, but what a pain in the neck. What is the problem?:

Re: woodnut

Hi

Do you have the memory dump saved? (do a system search in C:\WINDOWS for Minidump)

Also have you made any changes to you system lately.. software or hardware?

How recent is this -- has it ever happened before this occurrence?

Re: woodnut

Check your Event Viewer via Administrative Tools.

Open the System as well as Application tabs and look for red X errors that coincide with your problem. Details here:

http://support.microsoft.com/kb/308427

Also if your blue screen is showing a memory dump do the following:

Go to start | search (type in) .dmp
Note the location of your .dmp files.
If no .dmp files check for minidump.
Remember this location and the path that leads to it.

Then:

1) Download and install the

Debugging Tools from Microsoft

All you need do is download and install this. Make no attempt to start or run it.

2) Download and install this

debugwiz

This is a DOS based batch file that will command the above Microsoft Tools.

3) Open the Wiz & Browse to, or paste in the path to, your .dmp file.

4) After the Wiz creates a Text document attach it back to this thread.

If you are looking for links on how to interpret this data for yourself try here first:

Re: woodnut

I have a minidump with 12 line entries. Within the last 6 mos. or so I have re-loaded Windows XP due to a crash, and I have installed an additional hard drive.

I have downloaded debugging tools from Microsoft, but it evidently did not install. When I ran debug.wiz I got the message "no tools available" or something to that effect.

Click on the top right button where it reads "Click to download Tools".

Then give it a try

Re: woodnut

I have successfully downloaded debugging tools and installed. Ran debugwiz and analyzed the 1st line of my minidump file. I have a debuglog.txt file for that line. Now what? ( I have 11 more lines in the minidump file, the latest one dated 1/16/007)

KERNEL_MODE_EXCEPTION_NOT_HANDLED_M (1000008e)
This is a very common bugcheck. Usually the exception address pinpoints
the driver/function that caused the problem. Always note this address
as well as the link date of the driver/image that contains this address.
Some common problems are exception code 0x80000003. This means a hard
coded breakpoint or assertion was hit, but this system was booted
/NODEBUG. This is not supposed to happen as developers should never have
hardcoded breakpoints in retail code, but ...
If this happens, make sure a debugger gets connected, and the
system is booted /DEBUG. This will let us see why this breakpoint is
happening.
Arguments:
Arg1: c0000005, The exception code that was not handled
Arg2: 806ee753, The address that the exception occurred at

Arg2: 806ee753, The address that the exception occurred at
Arg3: ee708d68, Trap Frame
Arg4: 00000000
