Viewing a slide show in Windows XP

Hi there,

This is my first post to this forum, I'm sure it will prove to be just as friendly as other forums I visit. It certainly looks like a great place to be and I hope I will be able to make some useful contributions.

Anyway, to my first question, and this is probably dead simple if you know the answer, which of course I don't.

I am using Windows XP and I know that there is an option to view your pitures as a slide show. I thought this option was accessed through the View menu but it isn't, all I've got are:

Thumnails
Tiles
Icons
List
Details

Does anyone know how I can get at it please?

regards

Brian

Re: Viewing a slide show in Windows XP

Welcome to DAL. Just double click on a picture and it will open in windows picture & fax viewer. Down the bottom of the page you will then see the option to view slideshow.

Re: Viewing a slide show in Windows XP

Thanks, that seems to work, although I have to right click and choose 'Open With' from the context sensitive menu and then choose Windows Picture & Fax viewer otherwise it will just open the file in Photoshop.

I was really hoping to find a way to get the option on the menu or on the little drop down Views button which I've seen on other computers.

Any idea how to do this?

regards

Brian

Re: Viewing a slide show in Windows XP

I don't have that option on mine, only filmstrip and the other usual options. Will have to hunt around to see if it can be done.

Re: Viewing a slide show in Windows XP

Hey,

Go into My Pictures for example and then click View > Folder Options and then on the General Tab make sure you have "Show common tasks in folders" selected.

Now you should get a new view which gives you the option to view images as a slideshow as shown below.

Re: Viewing a slide show in Windows XP

Folder Options is on the tools menu on my computer. However I've selected "Show Common Tasks in Folders" and still no joy.

Incidentaly I don't have a folder called my pictures but this should work with any folder that has got image files in it.

I think Filmstrip is probably what I am really looking for but I can't see that either.

regards

Brian

Hi Brian,

What version of Windows XP are you running? Home or Pro?

Re: Viewing a slide show in Windows XP

You will only get the sidebar options if you click my computer, then navigate through to the pictures folder etc. That option isnt available in explorer.

To activate the filmstrip option
Right-click the folder and select Properties from the context menu.
Select the Customize tab.
Under "Use this folder type as a template:", select either Photo Album or Pictures and click OK. Click the Refresh button.
From the Windows Explorer View menu, select Filmstrip to view the pictures from within the selected folder

Re: Viewing a slide show in Windows XP

Hey it works...! thanks guys. I got both options available now Filmstrip and Slideshow.

I didn't realise that Slideshow could only be done through My Computer though and not through Explorer.

Incidentally I have been having this problem on both platforms, XP Pro and Home.

Re: Viewing a slide show in Windows XP

Yes that was my mistake Brian, as Tassie pointed out my instructions where when using My Computer and not Windows Explorer.

Thanks Tassie
