Unhappy Installing xp on a usb hard drive

Hello can somebody help me , I have purchased a new usb hard drive and trying to install windows on there as my old hard drive on my laptop is corrupt, I have plugged in my usb to my laptop and when i try to install window is get a message saying that i cannot install the windows, can anyone help me with this problem.

No. Only in the rare exception where a motherboard has a USB boot capability. This is very rare and you'd probably know it if it did. Sorry.

I have Windows 2000 on my USB external hard drive, it is drive E and I can boot from it. I also have XP on my C drive. Windows allows more than one operating system and you can choose which to boot from.
