Question Can't access my router

Hi everyone. I have sky Broadband with a netgear DG834GT router. I was having internet connection problems (disappointing speed etc.) Having already called tech support where they guided me through changing some of the settings on the router. This improved things for a while. However, I tried to change some of the settings myself to see if i could improve the connection. This involved different methods of encryption and using different chennels for the wireless connection. I forwarded a port for my torrent software. In addition I think I may have turned off the DHCP server.
Ever since I cannot connect to the router even through the ethernet cable. It just says that the page cannot be displayed.
When I turn the lan settings onto automatic settings it doesn't find the LAN network. If I manually assign an IP address it connects to the network but won't find the router. I've tried pressing the reset button on the router but it won't work.
I really don't know what to do at all. I know it's probably all my own fault. Please help!!

Re: Can't access my router

Hi,

Are you sure you reset properly?? Hold the reset button down for at least 20 seconds, then let go. The lights should start flashing. Wait until the lights stop flashing then bring up a command prompt window (start, run, cmd) type in ipconfig and look at your default gateway address. Im guessing that it should be 192.168.0.1

If this is correct (or whatever the default address is) type it into a web browser window and you should get the router login page. Then you can start to enter in your configuration again.

Nicola.

Re: Can't access my router

Thanks for your response. I have pressed and held it but nothing happens. It doesn't even feel like it's pressing against anything. If the reset button is faulty am I a bit screwed? Should using the reset button help my problem? I'll try and get Sky to send me a new on if this is the case.

Re: Can't access my router

Well if you feel that you cant press the reset button then there is no other way of resetting, unless you can log onto the router....

ok try this.... pull the power on the router, wait for 30 secs then put the power back in. when the lights stop flashing check my last post to see if you get an ip address , if you can see your default gateway then use this address in the browser. Once you have logged onto the router there will be a setting on the pages which allows you to reset the router. Try that way.

Also once you have got everything sorted I recommend that before playing with settings you make a backup of your working settings. There will be an option for you to do this in the admin once you are logged on.

Nicola.

Re: Can't access my router

I have fixed it!!! I had accidentally given my router a new ip address - 198.168.02. I am indeed an idiot!
Thanks for your help anyway Nicola.
