Memory Recognition

Hello!

I have an AMD64 Dual Core 2.2Ghz x 2, running Wondows XP professional. Have installed 4 x 1GB memory modules to total 4GB and use the computer for music production purposes only, running Cubase 4.

The computer has two problems at present:

1) The memory is NOT recognized as 4GB in 'My Computer - Properties'), but only as 3GB. However, it IS recognized as 4GB during the computer's self tests during boot-up. There must be some problem with the allocation of memory and the way the computer understands it altogether, because as I load more VST instruments (plug-ins to Cubase) which certainly shouldn't exhaust the 4GB memory, not even 2GB, I keep getting messages that 'memory is getting low'.

2) The Computer occasionally 'drops out' of Cubase, for 1-2 seconds, like it is doing something in the background and then returns to Cubase (which has disasterous effects for any production process).

PLEASE HELP!!! I am in the middle of a project and going mad, + the computer is relatively new!

Many many thanks to all of you in advance,

George

Re: Memory Recognition

The 3GB apparent limit for XP 32bit systems is widely published.

Although there is debate the tendency is to require 64bit systems to fully recognize 4GB of RAM. This is not to say that the computer is not using it. It is a Windows detection issue.

When you run Cubase do you turn off all other applications?

When you run Cubase how much CPU usage does it use? You can see this in the Task Manager > Processes Tab.
