video mode 103

Recently I was playing battlefield 2, when my screen froze. I then shut my computer down to restart it, used it a few times (in 4-bit safe mode), then after I shutdown again, I cant log back in... it just freezes and the screen flashes, I cannot boot into my computer setup (default f2) or into safe mode (default f8), however I can run the XP cd and get into the recovery console, is there any way that I can change the boot sequence from the recovery console? The screen is dotted with a bunch of dots up and down the screen in columns, and is in 4-bit video mode.

I have a Dell xps gen 5 with xp home.

the error I get is:

"Error: Cant enter setup. Video Mode 103 not supported by this video card."

Not sure what you can do there.

There is a Dell forum post re: Video Mode 103 that suggests using a VGA port for your monitor.

Or use on-board VGA if there is one.

also, I dont think this is related, as this recently happened in response to computer viruses (most likely). I have never had this problem before, and had not done anything of my prior knowledge to make any catalyst for this to happen, aside from the viruses of course.

After looking at the manual you have a PCI_E graphics card.

Some models have both DVI and VGA connectors. DVI are larger and generally a tan color whereas VGA are smaller and blue.

If you are connected to DVI try VGA (assuming you have the proper cables).

Otherwise clearing the CMOS might work as seen here: (scroll down to Clearing CMOS settings)

oh okay, I know what youre talking about. unfortunately, my warranty has expired, so no help from Dell.

also, I have both connected to my monitor, both analog and digital, however digital does not show any picture, its just black. only analog shows any picture. ive checked the back of my computer and monitor, and both are connected, however I remember problems with one of the connectors a while back, something happened to one of the little rod things, but I never had any computer problems with it, digital connection always worked, and always did until recently.

Remove the digital cable.

If still no go clear the CMOS.
